While Americans are obsessed with “updating” our own movie classics, the British can turn to their rich literary tradition for adaptation. Maybe if America had a Shakespeare or Austen we could leave Dr Seuss the fuck alone. Oliver Parker is making a career of directing sparkly new interpretations of Oscar Wilde (An Ideal Husband, The Importance of Being Ernest). They’re never less than handsome productions even if he sometimes forgets to bring the proper attitude back from the 19th Century.
It’s interesting to find Dorian Gray being given the full Gothic horror treatment (though strange to see the trailer eager to frame him and his portrait as a vampire of some sort.) Still, any role for Rebecca Hall is reason to lift a glass of absinthe, and Dorian Gray is shot by the legendary Roger Pratt. I’d trade 3 Karate Kids for a new version of Oliver Twist every few years, but am I the only one interested in this?
