Kathryn Bigelow to be on 60 Minutes

She will be on what I consider the most important stop on the road to Oscar: 60 Minutes. Here is a sneak peek. The mainstream media, as opposed to the chattering blogs, hasn’t much caught up with the Bigelow story — historic in its making — but all of that is about the change.

You probably wouldn’t believe this, but back when it was A Beautiful Mind versus Fellowship of the Ring, once A Beautiful Mind became the film to beat a scandal did erupt. It was the questioning of the accuracy of the novel, based on the life of John Nash. It had depicted John Nash as a family man and had omitted, for instance, the many affairs he’d had with men. That was the kind of thing, at the time, we all believed could derail the movie. But once it was on 60 Minutes, it was like waves rolling up the sandy shore and erasing the four letter word someone had carved into it.

Once a contender makes it to 60 Minutes, at this stage in the game, it always feels like a good omen to me. Jim Cameron was already on 60 Minutes at a crucial time when Avatar was about to open and there was all kinds of low expectations on the web. By the way, it’s funny how the Avatar team followed almost to the letter Titanic’s trajectory. They even had the lowered expectations upon its arrival in theaters.
