Well, it’s sort of an interesting development. ¬†It was announced recently that Todd McCarthy was being let go from Variety as being their longtime film critic. ¬†Just when we thought we were going to have to lose those great early reviews, McCarthy pops back up on Indiewire’s blog network with Deep Focus following colleague Anne Thompson’s footsteps. ¬†Variety loses two entertainment heavyweights. ¬†Indiewire snags them both.
McCarthy says there just aren’t the jobs for major film critics in major papers anymore. ¬†But even if there were, this seems like a good fit for McCarthy, whose elegant writing style will stand in contrast to much of the hurried writing we see on film lately.
He decided to jump onto the crazy world of online blogging:
No, the majority of possibilities lay in the electronic world, a domain I felt no need to embrace early on but which now clearly represents the only expanding arena for the written word. In crossing from the old world to the new, the horizon remained hazy, but I was reassured by longtime friends Anne Thompson and Leonard Maltin, both of whom preceded me in casting their lots here, that indieWIRE would be an ideal fit for me.
McCarthy will start by covering the Cannes Film Fest.  Deep Focus starts now.
