It’s nice to see Love is Strange getting so much attention here in the last days of Oscar season. Could it be pundits are overlooking this film for the Oscar race? Here is Cahiers du Cinema’s top ten:
1. Bruno Dumont‘s Li’l Quinquin.
2. Jean-Luc Godard‘s Goodbye to Language.
3. Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin.
4. David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars.
5. Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises.
6. Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac.
7. Xavier Dolan‘s Mommy.
8. Ira Sachs‘s Love Is Strange.
9. Alain Cavalier‘s Le Paradis.
10. Hong Sang-soo‘s Our Sunhi.

I always love watching Alfred Molina. So glad he’s getting a little bit of overdue recognition.
Maybe Ira Sachs now has more of a chance for an Original Screenplay nomination?
Choosing popular American films or Oscar contenders is just not cool and is even frowned down upon in elite snob circles.
They included Spring Breakers, Blue Is the Warmest Colour, Gravity and Lincoln on last year’s list. I think your comment reflects a popular fallacy perpetuated to make sense of the perceived eccentricity of Cahiers’ tastes each year when they publish their list.
I finally saw, yesterday, “Stranger by the Lake” (I think it was last year’s #1)… amazing film. Of course, not for all tastes, and extremely graphic, impossible to label under NC-17.
Thank you, KT, for saying what I’ve also been saying for years
This list is really weird. Although I love that The Wind Rises made it. It finally gets released on Netflix on the 16th. Cant wait!
I think there are ingrained politics at work for lists like this one. Choosing popular American films or Oscar contenders is just not cool and is even frowned down upon in elite snob circles. Jean Luc Godard as remarkable as some of his films are (I’m a huge fan of Le Mepris) in no way made the second best film of the year. I do approve of the Miyazaki selection….which should have beaten Frozen for the Oscar. No ifs ands or buts.
LOVE IS STRANGE is all kinds of great and, as much as I liked his first film, a great lead forward for Sachs. I sure hope it continues to pop up here and there all the way to an acting nomination. One of the films of the year for sure. One of only a handful. Also stoked for MAPS’ inclusion. And what else can be said about Miyasaki? What else?!
Up until today I hadn’t seen a single picture of ths movie. For a minute I thought Maradona was in it lol.
They love Ira Sachs. Wasn’t the superb Keep The Lights On on their list too a few years ago?
So glad Under the Skin isn’t being forgotten. The French always know what’s up. In a perfect world Under the Skin it would be a lock for Director, Cinematography and Score nominations.
