Of this list, I’m trying to imagine who will be given the honor of handing out Best Picture. If it were me, I don’t think I could put anyone above Sidney Poitier. But I suppose you never know. Remember when Barbra came out to give Best Director to Kathryn Bigelow? Didn’t they play Helen Reddy’s I Am Woman or did I dream that? I suspect Poitier, star of In the Heat of the Night, might help repeat that vote split. But one never knows. This is, after all, the Academy. By all accounts on the inside 12 Years won’t win, can’t win, not with these voters. This was just told to me by Jeff Wells, who phoned me early this morning. It is a win, a split that continues not to make sense, which is perhaps why the best predictors in the business so far, Steve Pond, Pete Hammond and Kris Tapley, and even our own statsgasm extraordinaire Marshall Flores continue to predict Gravity to take home both Picture and Director in keeping with the DGA rule and also the rule that says no film directed by a black man can win Best Picture ever. So there you go. Fingers crossed anyway.
