16 Emmy Nomination Surprising Snubs in 2016

It was a very good day for The Americans (or any American for that matter with American Crime, American Crime Story, and American Horror Story all getting nominations), but it wasn’t a great day for everyone.

Here are 16 of the most surprising Emmy snubs:

1. The Good Wife gets shut out.

It may have been the last season for the CBS series and that last chance for voters to vote in Julianna Margulies and crew, but you’d never know it. The beloved show was shut out in Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama (Alan Cumming), and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama (Christine Baranski).

2. They REALLY didn’t like Vinyl.

Bobby Cannavale is a two-time Emmy winner for Boardwalk Empire and Will & Grace, so an acting nod for HBO’s rock series seemed like a no-brainer. Nope. Maybe they didn’t want to go down with a sinking ship?

3. No acting love for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Rachel Bloom may have won the Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice for Best Actress, but did the Emmys think giving her a nod would be too crazy?

4. No love for the third season of Orange is the New Black.

No Outstanding Drama Series. No Outstanding Lead Actress. Not even Emmy sweetheart Uzo Aduba was nominated, and she won two years in a row.

5. Be still our hearts: Connor Jessup!

All of the great American Crime women were nominated, but Jessup, who arguably is the lead of the show, was nowhere to be found in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series category. Did Schwimmer take his place? JUICE!

6. Madoff made off with no nominations.

Both Richard Dreyfuss and Blythe Danner didn’t make the cut.

7. The Roots reboot yielded no acting noms.

Forest Whitaker and Anika Noni Rose were snubbed, even if the four-night program secured a spot in the Limited Series category.

8. Jenifer Lewis of black-ish will have to wait until next year.

It was a good day for the ABC sitcom with nods in the Outstanding Comedy Series and lead acting categories, but scene-stealer Jenifer Lewis was missing.

9. Christian Slater was frozen out of Mr. Robot love.

He seemed like a lock, but like Rachel Bloom, a Golden Globe win and a Critics’ Choice award couldn’t carry him to an Emmy nod.

10. Denis O’Hare of American Horror Story: Hotel got no love.

This is hard to swallow. Liz & Dick has more nominations than O’Hare’s Liz Taylor.

11. Show Me a Hero? Show me a nomination!

Nope.

12. No Girls resurgence

Even though it had one of the most critically acclaimed seasons of the entire series, the HBO show didn’t make it into the Outstanding Comedy Series or Outstanding Lead Actress categories.

13. No vacancy in Bates Motel

Freddie Highmore didn’t get a nomination and neither did the wonderful Vera Farmiga.

14. Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, fully missing

The Outstanding Variety Talk Series category is still a boys’ club.

15. Emmys are Fonda Frankie, but not Grace

Lily Tomlin landed in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy category, but her buddy Jane Fonda didn’t.

16. The Leftovers are still, well. . .

Despite stellar reviews and performances by the likes of Carrie Coon and Amy Brenneman, the HBO series didn’t connect with Emmy voters.

What snub or surprise shocked you the most? Leave it in the comments.

  1. To me, you have to really have an expectation of being nominated in the first place to be fully “snubbed,” but I do consider it a pretty significant omission that Schitt’s Creek was left out completely after a brilliant second season.

  2. I was hoping Girls would make a comeback or at least get some mention somewhere. The episode with Christopher Abbott was one of the best things I watched this year.

And The Leftovers is missing again – so disappointing.

  3. No Connor Jessup?! Biggest mistake since leaving out Corey Stoll for HoC season one. Ahh, Emmys.

  4. With all the (justifable) Americans love, no Noah Emmerich, Alison Wright or Dylan Baker in Supporting roles is a bit sad. Or Frank Langella. Yet… for her short scene… Margo Martindale gets another nomination?
