Podcast: Jason Issacs on ‘Mass’ and Embracing Connection in the Aftermath of Tragedy

As Jason Issacs describes, Mass “is a little film that occupies a gigantic emotional landscape”

From writer and first-time director Fran Kranz, Mass picks up six years after a tragic incident when Jason Issacs and Martha Plimpton, the parents of the victim meet in a church basement with Reed Briney and Ann Dowd, the parents of the boy who committed the crime against their son

With the camera close and the tension building, the quartet peels back the layers of pent-up emotion with blistering honesty.

Issacs portrays his character’s grief with a quiet stoicism that slowly unravels at pleasantries gives way to new truths—with much of the emotion playing across Issac’s face, a phenomenal performance from one of our finest character actors.

In our interview, Issacs discusses Mass’ ever-relevant themes of connection and empathy and crafting his character with the help of his director and a close bond with his costars.

‘The Gilded Age:’ Gold Standard or Imposter Syndrome?

This week, the Water Cooler Gang visits HBO’s newest drama The Gilded Age. Starring Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Christine Baranski, and many, many more, the Julian Fellowes drama envelops viewers in the historic Gilded Age period where new monied families struck out against the old money social mores. Is this a worthy successor to Fellowes’ Downton Abbey? Or does the series collapse under the weight of its lofty ambitions? Plus, is this series a competitor to Succession or Squid Game at the 2022 Emmys?

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

What To Make of the 2022 Golden Globe Nominations

We’ve taken a major step forward in the awards season with the 2022 Golden Globe nominations. After a year of challenges (to say the least), the Hollywood Foreign Press Association marched forward with this morning’s announcement, acknowledging their recent past and highlighting steps taken to clean it. All of that before announcing this year’s nominees. Here, we’ll focus primarily on the TV nominations: what surprises we saw (if any), what’s missing, and what new series realized a gain leading into next year’s Emmy race. We also briefly cover the film nominations too, just because we can.

But first, we catch up with this weekend’s season finale of HBO’s Succession.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

Pouring over the 2021 Critics Choice TV Nominations

We’re back in the television world as the Critics Choice Association revealed their nominations for the 2021 TV season. HBO’s Succession led the pack with eight nominations followed by limited series Mare of Easttown and Paramount+ series Evil, both with five nominations each. Aside from obvious homework where Evil is concerned, we dive into the nominees – a hybrid of last year’s Emmy eligibility and this year’s. Are there any surprises? Do these nominations forecast any new series that could fare well at next year’s Emmy Awards?

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.
