It’s Time for Much Drama: Our Final Sprint to the 2021 Emmys

We are rejoined by AD TV’s Emmy expert Jalal Haddad for a closer look at the 2021 Emmy Drama categories. Netflix’s The Crown largely dominated the TV Drama awards scene since premiering last fall. And rightly so. Season four of the Emmy-winning series arguably emerges as its most entertaining. It introduces the Charles and Diana drama as well as Gillian Anderson’s brilliant take on Margaret Thatcher. It also received a record number of acting nominations for the series, managing nominations in every available acting race — three in Supporting Actress in a Drama Series alone. But will those nominations translate into actual wins? If not, then what else steps into the winner’s circle. That’s the main topic for this week’s deep dive into the 2021 Emmy Drama races.

As always, we also talk about the media we’re most looking forward to in our Flash Forward segment.

Breaking Down the Comedy Races: Our Final Sprint to the 2021 Emmys

This week, the Water Cooler Podcast gang is joined by AD TV’s Emmy expert Jalal Haddad to look closely at the 2021 Emmy Comedy categories. Sure, nearly all signs point to a very good night for AppleTV+’s Ted Lasso, but what other series could possibly upset? Are there certain categories that point to how much of a race this really is? We give our current predictions in the Comedy races and look at potential upsets as we head into the home stretch.

As always, we also talk about the media we’re most looking forward to in our Flash Forward segment.

Podcast: How Casting Directors John Papsidera and Beth Bowling Allowed ‘The Flight Attendant’ to Soar with its Ensemble

The Flight Attendant became an immediate sensation because of its crackling writing and swift direction. We should not forget, however, how impeccably cast the HBO Max series is. Casting directors John Papsidera and Beth Bowling were excited to dive into a series that allows its actors to portray a huge array of emotions and situations

Every performer associated with the show subverts your expectations. Kaley Cuoco has never been better as a woman who didn’t realize how deep her own problems run. We fell in love with Rosie Perez because of her no-nonsense attitude and her bigger than life persona, but her Megan is lonely and desperate for a meaningful connection. Michiel Huisman is given the herculean task of playing a character that lives on the subconscious of our heroine.

The writing on the page of a script can sing on its own, but a carefully crafted ensemble breathes life into a new series. If anyone on The Flight Attendant didn’t vibe with the playful, tricky tone, they would stick out like a sore thumb. It is one of the best casts of the season.

Talking Through ‘The White Lotus’ and Its Controversial Finale

HBO’s limited series The White Lotus wrapped its 6-episode run this weekend. As we expected, Twitter was ablaze with all kinds of hot takes. Many found Mike White’s razor-sharp satire and brilliant performances guided them to a satisfying (if extremely uncomfortable) experience. However, nearly as many were put off by the series’ tone and portrayal of diverse characters. Joey and Clarence already weighed in heavily on the series, so Megan finally gets to offer her take. We discuss the ups and downs of the series, its reaction on social media, and whether or not it can go all the way to the 2022 Emmy season.

As always, we also talk about the media we’re most looking forward to in our Flash Forward segment.

Handicapping the 2021 Emmy Main Title Design Nominees

The Emmy cycle brings dozens of unique categories. However, one of the most wonderfully esoteric remains the Main Title Design race. Sure, there are your obvious contenders (Game of Thrones comes to mind), but every so often, we’re hit with bizarre wins that thrill and boggle the mind. Our most recent astonishment is Stranger Things’ 2017 win for its slowly appearing main title. It’s iconic, sure, but great? We look at this year’s crop of nominees and try to spot the early frontrunner.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

‘Ted Lasso’ Ropes Our Hearts Tighter in Season 2

AppleTV+’s Ted Lasso feels set to dominate this year’s Emmy Awards. It’s no coincidence that AppleTV+ released its second season just before the start of final round Emmy voting. Will that strategy work in the end? How does season two of Ted Lasso stack up against its award-winning freshman outing?
