This week, the full staff of Awards Daily TV gathers around the virtual water cooler to rehash last night’s historic 2020 Emmy ceremony.

We are almost ready to put the crazy 2020 Emmy season behind us. Canceled parties and FYC events plus delays in voting made the season feel even longer than it normally does. We talk about what we loved, what we loathed, and what surprised us about the 2020 Emmy ceremony. Did Jimmy Kimmel and his team respond well to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic? Looking at ‘Lovecraft Country’ and the DNC ‘Round the Cooler

The Water Cooler Gang takes a much-needed breather and catches up to HBO’s Lovecraft Country, the DNC, and more!

We’re in the midst of the 2020 Emmy Phase 2 voting window, and frankly, we’re a little tired. So, this week, we’re just laying low and catching up on a potpourri of topics. First up, since it’s the midst of Phase 2, we’re offering up suggestions to voting members of the Television Academy. We offer things they need to catch up on before they vote. Next up, we talk about our reactions to the all virtual Democratic National Convention. Did the quarantined event work for us? What did we love? What did we long for? Did we even watch it? Finally, we jump into HBO’s latest drama series Lovecraft Country. Does the Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams social justice/horror mashup work for us? What aspects of the series can we count on for the 2021 Emmy season? Yes, we know. It’s ridiculously early.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

On the Legendary and Emmy Nom’d Makeup and Hair in FX’s ‘Pose’

Awards Daily’s Kevin Dillon talks to the Emmy-nominated makeup and hair team behind season two of FX’s Pose.

Pose entered its second season on FX last June when the show jumped a few years ahead into 1990. I spoke with three different members of their makeup and hairstyling team who are all nominated for Emmys for their work on the season. The tone of the conversation with these three folks was bravery and collaboration. Each member of the team shared that folks behind the scenes like Ryan Murphy encouraged them to be upfront in their representation on screen.

Sheri Berman Laurence is nominated for Outstanding Period And/Or Character Makeup (Non-Prosthetic) for the first episode of the season “Acting Up.” During the conversation, Sheri talked about her work with Angel and the research she did on fashion models of the time to elevate the style. She also talked about adding new layers to Blanca. She was becoming a manicurist and a businesswoman, and they wanted to elevate her style from adding fingernails to giving her better make-up.

David Presto is nominated for Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Limited Series, Movie Or Special for the episode “Love’s in Need of Love Today.” David’s episode centered on Pray Tell (Billy Porter) reacting poorly to his AZT treatment, and his prosthetic work was done in many of the fantasy sequences. He also talked about how he wanted to capture the truly authentic experience of what a person on AZT would look like during this experience.

The collaboration was indeed key, and this culminated with the third participant in our conversation Barry Lee Moe who was nominated for Outstanding Period And/Or Character Hairstyling for his work in the episode “Work It.” A big chunk of this episode centered on Elektra and forming her new house. It also features the fantastic reveal she has at the ball with that incredibly elaborate hair. This along with Elektra’s constant make-up changes (which you may not notice) show these team members have worked hard to capture a very specific time period and highlight a world that is so important for the characters in Pose.

The Almodóvar Series: 2004s ‘Bad Education’

The Water Cooler Gang continues their Most Iconic Directors series with a look at Pedro Almodóvar’s NC-17 rated Bad Education.

This week, we continue the Almodóvar Series as part of our Most Iconic Directors series. This is, of course, our monthly look at the films and legacy of Spain’s Pedro Almodóvar. July’s title (yes, recorded in August – thanks Emmy nominations!) marks his second NC-17 rated film – Bad Education. The film also served as the first Spanish film to open the Cannes Film Festival. After giving Almodóvar his first Oscar for Original Screenplay, the Academy ignored Bad Education despite robust box office and critical acclaim. We take a look at the film with The Film Experience‘s Nathaniel Rogers. Is the NC-17 rating warranted today? Does the film stand up after 16 years?

August’s entry will be an Almodóvar Penelope Cruz double feature: Volver and Broken Embraces. Adam Lubitow will join us for the conversation.

But first, we continue our weekly therapy session, Corona(virus) Corner. Here, as always, we share what we’ve been watching since we’ve been sheltering at home.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

Another Fav: 2020 Emmy Noms for Main Title Design

The Water Cooler Gang returns and takes on one of their very favorite podcasts of the year, the annual review of Emmy nominees for Outstanding Main Title Design.

This week, we’re back after a brief hiatus to talk about one of our very favorite Emmy categories and podcasts of the year. The Main Title Design category has long thrilled and frustrated us with its unpredictability. See 2017 when Stranger Things won for its simplistic yet iconic design. This year’s crop includes the dancing dots of The Morning Show, the collage-inspired Godfather of Harlem, and the creepy fairy look of Carnival Row. But is Watchmen‘s simple take on the iconic title a frontrunner here? Or is it the heavier editing of Godfather of Harlem? Does The Morning Show‘s pedigree (the designer won last year for Game of Thrones and has two Oscars) push it ahead? We review each nominee for Main Title Design and give our ultimate predictions.

But first, we continue our weekly therapy session, Corona(virus) Corner. Here, as always, we share what we’ve been watching since we’ve been sheltering at home.

We close our podcast, as always, with the Flash Forward to the media we’re most anticipating in the upcoming week.

Directors DiMauro, Pehme Wade Into ‘The Swamp’ Of American Politics

What exactly is “the swamp?” And what do the American people expect when politicians claim to want to drain it? Those are exactly the questions that co-directors Daniel DiMauro and Morgan Pehme (Get Me Roger Stone) ask in their newest documentary The Swamp, premiering August 4 on HBO. The film explores the concept of “the swamp” though the eyes of three Republican congresspersons – Rep. Matt Gaetz (FL), Rep. Ken Buck (CO), and Rep. Thomas Massie (KY) – who each hold their own unique views on how to define D.C.’s swamp and how to actually drain it. Despite sitting on opposite ends of the political spectrum, DiMauro and Pehme found common ground on their views of congressional corruption.

Here on the latest Water Cooler Podcast, DiMaura and Pehme dive into their must-see documentary, The Swamp. They talk about working with Representative Matt Gaetz and why the media-friendly Gaetz was so willing to lay it all out on camera. They talk about the difficulties in being liberal filmmakers who get to witness bi-partisan activity die in the face of the partisan political circus of the impeachment hearings. Finally, they reveal what surprised them the most as the documented what they and most Americans feel is an exceedingly broken congressional system.
