Masters of Sex: Sex Ain’t Love

Showtime’s Masters of Sex returns this week after receiving a smattering of Emmy love, three nominations in acting categories including a well-deserved Best Actress Drama nomination for Lizzy Caplan. In a less competitive environment, season one would have easily tripled its nomination tally, but such is life. I do think it is guaranteed to triumph in one category: Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for Allison Janney’s astoundingly powerful work.

It’s not immediately clear where season two is headed as it spends much of its time wrapping up dangling plots. Still, the episode felt assured, engaged, and, by the end, ready to move forward with the next chapter in the saga of Bill Masters and Virginia Johnson.

Funny or Die on TV: Another Serving of Spoiled Ham

While the anthology series has been around as long as television itself, the recent Emmy successes of American Horror Story, True Detective, and Fargo prove the format is exceptionally trendy right now. And to underscore that fact, IFC has unnecessarily turned one of its comic oddities, the Funny or Die-produced The Spoils of Babylon, into an anthology. Airing in summer 2015, The Spoils Before Dying will reportedly evoke the 1950s jazz scene in an erotically charged detective story. It can only be an improvement.

Receiving two Emmy nominations last week, Babylon is the textbook definition of an acquired taste, probably only truly funny to those with an encyclopedic knowledge of the 70s and 80s-era miniseries it spoofs – War and Remembrance; The Winds of War; Rich Man, Poor Man; The Thorn Birds and so on. This is the kind of television event that lovingly crafts picturesque scenes of natural splendor – actors monologuing against vast mountain ranges or proclaiming love against an impossibly beautiful setting sun – but juxtaposes those scenes against cityscapes populated with cardboard skyscrapers and matchbox car traffic. Hell, one of the characters is played by a department store mannequin who speaks in voice overs, has sex with Tobey Maguire, cries real tears, gives birth to an American Girl knock-off, and melts in a fire.

Getting Caught up with Last Week’s “Extant”

The first thing we see in the pilot episode of the futuristic thriller Extant is Halle Berry throwing up.  Is this too obvious of a joke regarding the show’s potential?  It may take some time for me to get used to Berry’s presence on the small screen.  The Oscar-winner is the latest actress to make the leap from big screen features to small screen endeavors.  It’s no secret that there are better parts (especially for women) on television now, and the ambitious Steven Spielberg produced series definitely has me intrigued.  I’m very curious as to where the show is going to go.

Under the Dome: It’s raining blood! Halleluiah! It’s raining blood!

Never a dull moment in Chester’s Mill. So far this season we’ve seen a magnetic dome, killer caterpillars, and now a little Type O in the town below.

The episode opened with New Girl going through Barbie’s belongings (err probably more of Julia’s belongings since he moved in with her). Barbie caught her and became suspicious, and after admonishing Julia for “bringing in strays,” the hospitable redhead gave this wonderful retort.

“The last stray I brought in was you.”

Meanwhile, guest star alert! In a barber shop across town, Big Jim got a clean shave from none other than Lyle Chumley (Dwight Yoakam). The two later joined everyone at the only restaurant in town, where Rebecca Pine rallied together the young 14- to 18-year-olds to do an experiment involving wind energy (sans Norrie who refused to participate because she didn’t go to school there and had better things to do like pout). New Girl showed up with Julia and volunteered participation in the study, much to the strange delight of Joe, who was suddenly nice to the young woman he just last week tried to shoot in a jail cell.

Emmys 2014: The Dragons Lead the Way

It’s taken me a few hours to form any kind of reaction to today’s announcement of the 66th annual Primetime Emmy nominations. The nominations were neither incredibly perfect in their selections nor particularly surprising in their disappointments. Given the incredible level of quality on television today, there simply aren’t enough slots to go around and recognize everything that deserves it. Somebody has to go empty-handed.
