But first, Emmy season is in full swing. Jazz and Jalal Haddad dish on the biggest parties, the latest gossip, and the Emmy frontrunners from their position on the ground in Los Angeles.

Timothy Simons On Politics, Jonah Ryan, and Saying Goodbye to ‘Veep’

Awards Daily talks to Timothy Simons, star of HBO’s classic political comedy Veep, on the latest Emmy edition of the Water Cooler Podcast.

Of all the classic characters on HBO’s ensemble political comedy Veep, Timothy Simons’ Jonah Ryan emerges as one you won’t soon forget. Starting Season 1 as glorified intern/the White House liaison to the Vice President’s office (Selina Meyer, played by the great Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Jonah evolves over seven seasons to ascend to some of the highest offices in the United States.

The journey would be unbelievable if not for the brilliant, searingly hilarious, and very Emmy-worthy performance of Timothy Simons. Oh, and some would argue the deteriorating fabric of modern politics helps bridge the credibility gap too.

In this special edition of Awards Daily’s Water Cooler Podcast, Clarence Moye talks to Simons about Jonah’s journey over Veep‘s seven seasons. Simons discusses his political growth and activity on Twitter and the relationship between Veep and our current political environment it either influenced or reflects. Your pick. He also talks about his favorite Jonah Ryan insults and what current political figures inspired the overall evolution of Jonah Ryan. Plus, hear Simons talk about what was it like to return to Veep after an extended hiatus due to Louis-Dreyfus’s battle with breast cancer?

And what will Timothy Simons ultimately miss most about working on this Emmy-winning series? Have a listen to his interview with Awards Daily to find out!

Podcast: Jimmy Fallon On Career Choices, LA Memories and Going to Puerto Rico

In this special Emmy edition of the Water Cooler Podcast, Jazz Tangcay talks to The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon host himself, Jimmy Fallon about career choices, doing a beer run with Kobe Bryant and taking the show to Puerto Rico.

West Coast Emmy voters were treated to a very Friday night when late-night host Jimmy Fallon flew into town for a whirlwind visit. Before leaving to make a surprise visit to Saturday Night Live, I headed to NBC/Universal in Universal City to sit down with Fallon for this special Water Cooler Podcast.

Fallon recalls living in LA when he was doing the standup circuit. “I think back to when I was struggling here and doing standup and living off of ramen soup. I look back with great memories. I had no money. I kept auditioning and kept trying and being told no.”

The city did have some fun memories for him, like that one time he met a young basketball player called Kobe Bryant. “I’m at this party once and he’s probably 18-years-old. He goes, ‘What do you do for a living?’ I tell him I’m a comedian and I ask him, ‘What do you do?’ He goes, ‘I play basketball.'” Assuming he was in college basketball, Fallon asked him, ‘Where do you go to school?’ Bryant replied, ‘I’m actually on the Lakers.’ Fallon shares how the two went on a beer run.

Since 2014, Jimmy Fallon entertains night after night on NBC whether he’s slow-jamming with Democratic candidate or getting the entire cast of The Avengers to sing ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’. Fallon injects that burst of energy and fun into late night.

Listen as Fallon, a six-time Emmy winner shares :

A story about working with Gordon Hunt for acting lessons.

Why Larry Sanders inspired him.

Taking over Central Park and filling it with 1500 audience members.

Taking the show to Puerto Rico to help shine a light on hurricane relief.

Who he wants to play at Wii Tennis Aces after beating Stan Wawrinka last time.

Going to Wimbledon each year.

And how he considered being a priest and a mailman at one point.

The Grim Reaper Struck TV Land. Who Got the Ax?

This week, the Water Cooler gang talks about the recent major cancellations from TV land including CBS’s Murphy Brown. Plus, what’s going on with Constance Wu?

It comes this time every year. The axe has fallen in television land, and some of your favorite (or most hated shows) are getting the boot. Which major shows were ripped off the air? Did the reaper come for any potential Emmy contenders? And what’s going on with Constance Wu after her ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat received an unexpected renewal?

But first, Clarence had a conversation with a member of the Netflix Emmy campaign team. What shows were on the forefront of their minds as we head into Emmy season?

Joey and Clarence dish the 2019 Tony nominations led by musicals Hadestown, Ain’t Too Proud to Beg, and Tootsie. Plus, where’d you go Mockingbird?

Joey and Clarence saddle up to the Water Cooler to chat about the 2019 Tony nominations. Musical Hadestown leads the pack with 14 bids. Temptations Jukebox sensation Ain’t Too Proud to Beg follows closely with 12. Presumed front-runner Tootsie received 11 bids, signaling a close race between the big crowd pleaser and the artistic triumph.

On the play front, buzzy nominees To Kill A Mockingbird and Network failed to score Best Play nominations despite performance and direction bids.

We chat about the nominees, those productions who missed out, and who could potentially take home a Tony when the winners are announced on June 9.

Our Favorite Movies: Listener Kevin Dillon’s ‘Spotless Mind’

Listener Kevin Dillon joins the Cooler Gang to present one of his favorite movies, 2004’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Hopefully, you won’t want to erase the memory of this week’s podcast. The Cooler Gang is joined by listener Kevin Dillon as he presents his entry in the Our Favorite Movies series, 2004’s Oscar- winning Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Starring Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey, Spotless Mind tells the story of Clementine and Joel, two lovers whose difficult path to love leads them to erase unpleasant memories of each other. Directed by Michael Gondry from an Oscar-winning screenplay by Charlie Kaufmann, the film is widely acclaimed as one of the very best films of the 2000s. Kevin talks to us about what he loves in the film, and why it’s one of his very favorite movies.

But first, Kevin joined our podcast on a particularly good week for him. See, Kevin is a massive comic book fan, and he LOVED Avengers: Endgame. But what did Joey and Clarence think about it (Megan hasn’t seen it yet)? With a Cinemascore of A+ and a massive world-wide box office of $1.2 billion, does the culmination of 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe stand a chance at a Best Picture Oscar nomination? Does Disney even care? Plus, Joey describes his “touching” moment while watching it.

Our Summer Movie Preview, Part Deux!

This week, the Cooler Gang continues their breakdown of all the major July and August 2019 summer movies in the 2019 Summer Movie Preview.

This week, we’re finishing our 2019 Summer Movie preview. Last week, we covered cinematic offerings from May and June. Next up are July and August. Early whispers point to Disney’s mid-July live-action version of The Lion King becoming one of the highest grossing films of all time. Will that film suck up all the movie-going dollars? Also, we ponder the tough questions of the summer. Do we need another Spider-Man? Will Once Upon a Time in Hollywood return Quentin Tarantino to the best picture race? Does the allure of another Cate Blanchett performance overcome the stench of a 6-month postponement for Where’d You Go Bernadette?

But first, Clarence has seen two episodes of the upcoming HBO limited series Chernobyl. What’s the early Emmy forecast for this highly anticipated project? Also, is Game of Thrones really gunning for a new Emmy record? “Jenny of Oldstones,” the original song from this weekend’s episode, received coverage both in the episode and over the closing credits thanks to Florence and the Machine. Can it get an Emmy nomination? All this and more on our latest edition.

Next week, long-time podcast listener Kevin Dillon contributes his Our Favorite Movies entry in Michael Gondry’s 2004 masterpiece Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Be sure to catch up before we kick off the conversation.

Our 2019 Summer Movie Preview, Part 1

This week, the Water Cooler gang kicks off their annual look at the summer movie season. Also, they give their thoughts on the beginning of the end of Game of Thrones.

Every year, the summer movie season starts earlier and earlier. This year, summer begins in April with the release of Avengers: Endgame, the highly anticipated culmination of 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But wait, there’s more! On this week’s podcast, we’re starting our 2-part dive into the summer movie season. What are we most looking forward to? What are we dreading? And what, if any, summer movies have legitimate Oscar buzz? We kick things off this week with April through June. Next week’s podcast wraps it up with July and August. Feel free to comment below on what you’re most looking forward to in the summer of 2019.

Springing into New Seasons from ‘Veep,’ ‘Killing Eve,’ and ‘The Twilight Zone’

This week, the Water Cooler Gang look at new the season from Emmy front-runner Veep. Plus, we cover the sophomore season from Sandra Oh’s Killing Eve and dive into Jordan Peele’s The Twilight Zone.

Pollen isn’t the only thing Spring brings. This week, it’s a week of multiple major television premieres, and we’re diving into them on the podcast. First up, AMC/BBC America’s Killing Eve returns without writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge. Does Season 2 continue the excellence of its freshman season? Or is it too early to tell? Then, fresh off his smash horror film Us, Jordan Peele brings his perspective to the classic The Twilight Zone. We’ve seen Kumail Nanjiani’s “The Comedian.” Does it effectively transport us to another time and dimension? Then, HBO’s political comedy classic Veep returned last weekend for its seventh and final season. Does the show have anything new to say, or is it pretty much business as usual?

On April 29 long-time podcast listener Kevin Dillon contributes his Our Favorite Movies entry in Michael Gondry’s 2004 masterpiece Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Be sure to catch up before we kick off the conversation.
