After all the drama over Showtime’s Twin Peaks reboot, Deadline reports that original series star Sherilyn Fenn has joined the update’s cast. Currently, only Kyle MacLachlan is confirmed to return to the series, but Deadline‘s report puts Fenn in a major role. Other original Twin Peaks stars rumored to join the reboot include Miguel Ferrer (Agent Albert Rosenfield), Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer), David Patrick Kelly (Jerry Horne), and Richard Beymer (Ben Horne).
Lara Flynn Boyle (Donna Hayward) will apparently not return to the series after declining the 1992 film version as well. She was replaced by Moira Kelly in the controversial and critically derided cult film. Since its debut, however, many high-profile critics have re-appraised it and given it new respect.
Showtime’s Twin Peaks will, however, apparently see an influx of new faces. Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Robert Knepper (Prison Break), Balthazar Getty (Brothers & Sisters), and Amanda Seyfried (Big Love). Director David Lynch returns behind the camera after a highly publicized budget dispute with Showtime. He will direct scripts co-written with original series co-creator Mark Frost.
The Twin Peaks reboot is currently scheduled to drop in 2017, although the Peaks faithful (myself included) are holding out hope for a Fall 2016 debut. There is no word on the series’ plot.
