Joey Predicts Golden Globes TV Nominations

I found that it was hard to predict the Golden Globes. They aren’t incredibly consistent year to year, and sometimes the line between comedy and drama is VERY blurred (we’ll get to that in a second, Orange is the New Black). My predictions might be horrible wrong, so we will see who is pointing fingers at me in the morning. Here goes…

Best Drama Series

  • Downton Abbey
  • Game of Thrones
  • The Good Wife
  • House of Cards
  • The Knick

I was tempted to put ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder in here, but I’m just crazy. Downton always seems to get in, so it seems like a safe bet. The Hollywood Foreign Press was on a Boardwalk Empire kick but they’ve seemed to cool their love for it by not nominating it last year. The only new show up there is Showtime’s period medical drama, but don’t be surprised if it’s How to Get Away or The Affair or Penny Dreadful or if Masters of Sex repeats.

Best Comedy Series

  • The Big Bang Theory
  • Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Girls
  • Modern Family
  • Orange is the New Black

Orange competed in Drama last year, so they wisely switched. Big Bang is pretty consistent, and the same can be said about Girls (which won in this category 2 years ago). Oddly, Veep has never been nominated. Is this the year?

Best Actor – Drama Series

  • Jon Hamm, Mad Men
  • Clive Owen, The Knick
  • Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan
  • Martin Sheen, Masters of Sex
  • Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Best Actress – Drama Series

  • Viola Davis, How to Get Away with Murder
  • Julianna Marguiles, The Good Wife
  • Tatiana Masley, Orphan Black
  • Kerry Washington, Scandal
  • Robin Wright, House of Cards

This one felt a little tougher to call. Homeland seemed to dip last season, so that bumped Claire Danes out for me. Marguiles just won the Emmy so she is probably in. Davis is so respected (did you hear those cheers at the Screen Actors Guild when her name was announced?) so every opportunity to honor her seems like a given.

Best Actor – Comedy Series

  • Louie CK, Louie
  • Ricky Gervais, Derek
  • Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory
  • Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine
  • Jeffrey Tambor, Transparent

So…Transparent is a comedy? Ok, then. Tambor is great in it, so he should be nominated no matter what category he’s in. Until the last minute I had Robin Williams in here for The Crazy Ones, but I switched it out at the last minute for Gervais. Parsons seems to be a given, and Samberg (last year’s inexplicable winner…yeah…he won…) might repeat.

Best Actress – Comedy Series

  • Lena Dunham, Girls
  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep
  • Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation
  • Tracee Elliot Ross, Black-ish
  • Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black

My fingers are tightly crossed for Ross to get a nomination for ABC’s successful Black-ish. She’s charming and absolute hilarious on the show, so I hope she can get in.

True Detective

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • American Horror Story
  • Fargo
  • The Normal Heart
  • Olive Kitteridge
  • True Detective

Best Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock
  • Woody Harrelson, True Detective
  • Matthew McConaughey, True Detective
  • Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart
  • Billy Bob Thorton, Fargo

Taking a page from the Emmy handbook, these gents are familiar from the television awards season. Craig, Megan, and Clarence all sang Harrelson’s praises, so I hope he gets in alongside his Detective co-star.

Best Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Maggie Gyllenhaal, The Honorable Woman
  • Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Whatever Season We’re On
  • Frances McDormand, Olive Kitteridge
  • Allison Tolman, Fargo
  • Cicely Tyson, A Trip to Bountiful

These women have all been praised up and down for their performances, so this category was easy to make up. Perhaps the only person who might not get in is Tolman, and she could be replaced with Sarah Paulson or Minnie Driver.

Best Supporting Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Matt Bomer, The Normal Heart
  • Peter Dinklage, Game of Thrones
  • Martin Freeman, Sherlock
  • Bill Murray, Olive Kitteridge
  • Jim Parsons, The Normal Heart

For some reason, I am predicting a Modern Family shut out, so that might be the dumbest thing I’ve predicted this entire time. I could be stupid or a genius for predicting more than one slot for The Normal Heart. Everyone thought it was a sure thing to sweep the Emmys and we were all wrong there. This category make up is stupid as hell. Same goes for Supporting Actress.

Best Supporting Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television

  • Uzo Aduba, Orange is the New Black
  • Kathy Bates, American Horror Story: Crazy Racist Role or Bearded Lady Role
  • Kate Mulgrew, Orange is the New Black
  • Julia Roberts, The Normal Heart
  • Sofia Vergara, Modern Family

American Horror Story or The Normal Heart or Modern Family could take all these slots. For all I know, Julie Bowen could get in for Modern Family or maybe Laverne Cox from Orange is the New Black. Like I said, stupid as hell.
