According to an article originally published in Variety, NBC is considering a live staging of Aaron Sorkin’s play A Few Good Men. Assuming NBC can handle the truth, the production is anticipated to be the next offering in NBC’s lucrative partnership with producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
Zadan and Meron produced NBCs Emmy-nominated The Sound of Music Live! and have Peter Pan, another musical production starring Girls’ Allison Williams and Christopher Walken, in the works for early December.
Sorkin’s A Few Good Men details the court-martial proceedings against two young Marines accused of murder. Originally premiering on Broadway in 1989, the play was quickly adapted as an Oscar-nominated film starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore, and Kevin Bacon.
Back in the day, I was a huge fan of the film and, particularly, Sorkin’s dialogue, and I suspect this televised event will be well suited to the small screen. It would certainly be more vital and timely production than the highly rated but ill-received Sound of Music Live! and the seemingly unnecessary Peter Pan adaptation, which was originally staged back in 1955 with Mary Martin.
In preparation for the event, Sorkin, according to the Variety piece, will be re-writing his original play to better fit the television medium. There have been no official announcements on casting, directions or airdates for the production. Consider this the start of my campaign to cast Cobie Smulders in the Demi Moore role.
