Though he was more successful with The English Patient, by far my favorite Anthony Minghella movie is Truly, Madly, Deeply – a film I consider to be the best and most true film about love and loss. It’s really about our inability to let go and the way we cling to ghosts.
His best film, though, I think is The Talented Mr. Ripley. A minor success when it was released it is very likely Minghella most underrated and accomplished film. Matt Damon does his best work in the film, and Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow are perfectly cast as the golden couple. The only clips I could find of the film on YouTube were video montages set to music, which doesn’t quite do the film justice. Minghella death’s was due to a brain hemorrhage during a routine neck operation, according to Variety.
I couldn’t resist commenting. Exceptionally well written!
