It’s something to finally see Rove squirming under the microscope. The New York Times talks to Oliver Stone and actually asks Karl Rove about it:
“I don’t think they made any attempt to have this conform to any reality except that which exists in the cerebral cortex of Oliver Stone, which is a brain with only a functioning left side,” Mr. Rove said. “This is a political film that is an attempt to influence an election that is about four years too late.”
Told of that comment, Mr. Stone said Mr. Rove would enjoy the movie because Mr. Bush “looks good in many ways.” While he considers Mr. Rove “one of the most devious men,” he gave him “the benefit of the doubt,” he said, though adding that he wished Mr. Jones “had been taller like Rove, and fatter.”
As far as Oscar goes, I think W has its best shot with Josh Brolin being nominated, but perhaps there is a supporting nod or two in there as well. Screenplay, possibly. It doesn’t sound, though, that it’s headed for Best Picture territory, where Oliver Stone’s films have so often dwellt in the past. But there is no reason to consider the possibility. Right now I’m sticking with Brolin as the lone nod, and am reserving the right to change my mind later.
