Biggest Best Picture Upset?

Nikki Finke points us to movietickets.com poll of which was the biggest best picture upset. I think I can tell you with some authority that Brokeback Mountain and Crash is considered the biggest upset. I also have never agreed with Saving Private Ryan over Shakespeare in Love for the simple reason that Private Ryan craps out in the last third so spectacularly it ruins it, whereas Shakespeare in Love is perfect from start to finish. I don’t think I’ll ever come around to agreeing with that very popular sentiment, though. And I say this as Spielberg fan. Here is the list:

1. Shakespeare in Love, 1999 (over Saving Private Ryan) (44%)
2. Crash, 2006 (over Brokeback Mountain) (18%)
3. Dances with Wolves, 1991 (over Goodfellas) (13%)
4. Rocky, 1977 (over Taxi Driver) (13%)
5. How Green Was My Valley, 1942 (over Citizen Kane) (12%)
