It occurred to me while watch TCM’s 31 Days to Oscar’s showing of Stanley Kubrick’s ironic and brilliant Dr. Strangelove: Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb that a great wrong was done this film that it didn’t at least win Screenplay. This year perfectly defines what exactly is wrong with the Oscars.
Dr. Strangelove was nominated for Actor (the great Peter Sellers), Picture, Director and Adapted Screenplay. Four nominations. It won zero.   Here is who won instead.
Picture: My Fair Lady
Actor: Rex Harrison, My Fair Lady
Director: George Cukor, My Fair Lady
Adapted Screenplay: Becket
I’m not going to say Becket wasn’t good. But I think I can say with a fair amout of certainty that Dr. Strangelove was the best and most lasting script in that category.¬†¬†¬† But Becket had to win something.
Another great scene after the cut:
