Is it too early to start seriously thinking about next year’s Oscar contenders? In a word, yes. But if it’s all in good fun, who really cares? Nat Rogers at the Film Experience has done just that. He rolls the dice on the Eastwood pic and comes up with a forecast of “maybe.” Good thing for that movie. The last thing it needs to be is the top-heavy frontrunner. I think of it like that scene in Jaws where no one is going into the water. One family is finally pressured to go in first, everyone follows and chaos ensues.
Nat does a good job at not saying anything permanent that can’t be undone later.
“For my predictions, I’m going with four high profile pictures with a nice spread of release dates and studios, plus one small wonder people seem enthused about already, An Education.”
Nat bravely chooses the other four:
The Human Factor (or whatever it will be called)
Nine
Public Enemies
The Lovely Bones
I got to say, right off the bat, that these would be a little too cool for AMPAS. Maybe I’m wrong but with the exception of two films, Nine and The Human Factor, the others would be very brave, pre-2008, Academy inclinations.¬† His second tier has Avatar in there. All in all, it’s a great run-down of what to expect in the Best Pic race. Here’s to hoping it’s wide open all the way.
