Against All Odds, Lili and Richard Zanuck win Best Picture Oscar for DRIVING MISS DAISY (1989)
With ten Best Picture nominees, like at the Globes and with other critics’ groups, focus will lean more heavily on other categories, especially Best Director, Best Screenplay and perhaps the acting categories. This is how it’s going to go down, I predict.¬† There will still be five films that most will believe are the Big Five. And those films will show up across various categories. We will be watching and wondering whether any film without a Best Director nod can win — Driving Miss Daisy has traditionally been that film but now one has to wonder if that rule is about to change in a big way. Thus, we here at Awards Daily will be watching specifically which directors are chosen and whether or not any of the non-Director films are strong enough to win. The director is the star of the Best Picture race, or has been in the past, so we now have a brand new bone to chew on. If this has already been mentioned in the comments or by Ryan or by the thousands of sites covering this news, please forgive me. I’m in Yosemite and supposedly on vacation!
