Maybe director Mike Newell has never yet made it to the top tier of Oscar contenders, and Prince of Persia is unlikely to be his pumpkin coach to the ball — but I like him. Even Newell’s weakest movies are polished and entertaining. Besides, Prince of Persia is being shot by 4-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer John Seale (Witness, The English Patient, Cold Mountain, Rain Man, Dead Poets Society), and I usually look to that credit right after director and writer when trying to evaluate a movie’s pleasure potential. Also a sucker for sabers and such, I’m hoping Prince of Persia might be Alexander with a coherent plot.
