Never thought I would be so glad to see these two dudes on TV. We once had the luxury of ridiculing Siskel and Ebert, then Ebert and Roeper, and then the Bens happened. After that, it became crystal clear that though we may love to tease the nerdy, brainy film critics who give their “see it” or “skip it”, we want them on that wall, we need them on that wall.

We need film critics. We need them because they’re brainy, because they bring their education, experience and unbiased reactions to the table. When I saw AO Scott and Michael Philips I wanted to kiss their shiny shoes. Yes, we’re all critics in our own ways. We all have valid opinions. Well, most of us. But film critics are a necessary and dying breed. Here’s to hoping that more people see their value.
The snooty duo are going to be doing a Soderbergh retrospective on their site. Unfortunately I missed their review of The Informant! Hopefully it will go online soon.
And, as a sidenote, A Few Good Men deserved better than to have Demi Moore play such a pivotal role. Without that regrettable casting choice, it would have been a great film.
