The Kennedy Center Honors kicked off awards season proper last night as the tribute was televised. Mel Brooks, Robert De Niro and Bruce Springsteen (three of my personal heroes) were honored, along with Dave Brubeck and Grace Bumbry. What surprised me most about them was that the critics had given Mel Brooks’ The Producers bad reviews. Really? There is stupid and there is stupid and that, my friends, was stupid. And it just goes to show you that some films take time before they can be fully appreciated. The Producers is easily one of the best Mel Brooks films and one of the best films period. Anyway, at least it won Best Screenplay and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
