Mike Flemming at Deadline Hollywood Daily talks up the updated remake of A Star is Born. Apparently, those in talks for the part of the young woman include Beyonce, Rhianna and Alicia Keyes. The male names include Robert Downey, Jr. and Jon Hamm. There have been three films based on the same idea – old guy mentors a talented young woman who ultimately surpasses him as he fades away.
The three versions have been the 1937 version with Janet Gaynor and Frederic March (7 Oscar noms, both leads nominated, 1 win for writing). The 1954 version, with Judy Garland and James Mason (six Oscar nominations, both leads nominated), and finally, the 1976 version with Kris Kristofferson and Barbra Streisand (four Oscar nominations, no acting).
If all goes according to plan, perhaps the fourth can have no Oscar nominations at all. And your choice for Norman and Esther would be…?
