Oscar Quote of the Day

A piece in Salon a couple days ago calls the 1966 film, “The Oscar” “the greatest terrible movie of all time.” The article itself begins with an irresistible quote:

“Nothing is more exhilarating than philistine vulgarity,” wrote Vladimir Nabokov, and if there was ever a better description of the Oscars, well, I‚Äôm still looking.

And ends with another stinger:

Remember, you do not judge “The Oscar.” It judges you.

I couldn’t find a clip from “The Oscar” so I chose the Judy Garland James Mason scene above — trying to set the bar high for tonight’s Most Mortifying Oscar Moment. And for all the passionate movie lovers who’ve made this season so stimulating, infuriating and ultimately gratifying, I’ll leave you wonderful readers with another Oscarwatcher quote:

“And the¬†smoke of their torment¬†ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image…[Rev. 14:11]”

ok, so maybe that last quote isn’t specifically about the Oscars. But it feels like it fits fairly comfortably, does it not?
