The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

What can one say about Sandra Bullock’s high point and low point in her career? People call it the Oscar curse, but what it really is is schadenfreude – or the desire to see someone successful take a major tumble. We can’t all pretend like we are watching a marriage fall apart so much as we are seeing the vultures flying in and pecking at the exposed meat. Bullock’s success unfortunately opened the door for opportunists to make a buck or two off of her dirtbag husband’s infidelities.

I bring it up only to say that I don’t believe the idea of an Oscar curse – that a star’s marriage falls apart the moment she wins an Oscar. For one thing, many marriages are sweet illusions anyway – already a disaster but held together for the sake of the Oscar (Julia Roberts was one of these). For another thing, the press gets a taste for blood when someone is at the height of his/her fame. Perhaps there could be jealousy involved — but I would wager that the marriages were all in trouble long before any of these women went on to win Oscars. As for the other women who came forward after the Oscar? They have to wake up with themselves in the morning and face the low depths to which they have stooped for a little money and fame. How sad. Surely one can think of a better use of one’s time? Then again, if they’re low enough to bang Jesse James perhaps selling out to a tabloid is a step up.

What I get is a few of these dumb little sluts nice young girls stepping forward to make a buck. What I don’t get is the media playing along — sure, times are tough and they need to sell magazines. They don’t much care what it does for the culture on the whole. But is there really any need for articles like this? (After the jump).

The magazine’s source claimed Jesse had sex with women while Sandra was visiting him at work, and he has a room where he would have sex with women across from his bike shop West Coast Choppers in Long Beach, CA.

“Jesse’s M.O. is quickie sex,” the source added. “[He] was also into rough sex. One woman said he’d grab her by the neck, put her up against the wall, and tell her how hot she was.”

Jesse also settled an expensive sexual harassment lawsuit and a second harassment claim, described earlier, in recent years.

In the first lawsuit, Jesse’s former employee Deann McClung sued him for sexual battery, sexual harassment and wrongful termination in 2000 for an undisclosed amount after she claimed Jesse fired her several months after he “forced” her to perform fellatio on him and then locked her in his office.

Deann told the Enquirer that Jesse is a “brutal, terrible person with no heart, no conscience.”

I think that a door has been opened now and we can expect a lot more of this. When women win Oscars, maybe men too, they are going to be fair game for this kind of media madness. There has to be a beast to slaughter for the vultures to peck away at.  I hope that one day she can look at her Oscar and not think about her terrible choice of mate.
