Where Jeff Wells goes, trouble often follows. He is not a PC type and therefore, he often gets into a bit of trouble by writing his emotional reactions – hell, we all do. Steve Pond wrote up a funny bit about it and you can go back and piece together the story but I thought you might want a bit of perspective from someone right in the thick of it. Pond writes:
When the indieWIRE critics poll initially gave the film a B average (it’s since dropped to a C+), Wells jumped to its defense with an indignant post accusing indieWIRE of ‚Äútrying to bully‚Äù fans of the Gonzalez Inarritu film, calling it ‚Äúa sad and highly poetic little film that needs all the intelligent support it can get‚Äù and charging, ‚ÄúAnd yet certain dweeb types have, it seems, gotten together and decided to dismiss it.‚Äù
We all seek different things from the movies we see. Some of us are in the phase where we like experimental, mostly meaningless experimental cinema. Some of us only like films that make us cry. Some of us like comedies only. That a handful of people didn’t like Biutiful proves only that there are different types of people at this fest. There are film critics, journalists, bloggers, fans — all pooled together for an opinion. Is it that surprising that it’s all over the map?¬† That said, nothing would make me die from laughter more if Biutiful then won the Palme d’Or. I would cackle with self-satisfied glee.
No one really knows what film the jury will choose. It is, at this point, completely unpredictable.¬†¬† There are so many different ways they could go. The Oscars, it ain’t.
