Marion Cotillard in Vogue

Vogue spends the day with Marion Cotillard tagging along to private Paris studios, Dior fetes for David Lynch, street market strolls, Pompidou musings, and “a joyous bohemian jamboree” for boyfriend Guillaume Canet. Along the way, an achingly enviable profile is woven. There’s a lot to rhapsodize about, but don’t expect to learn much about Inception. This is the only time it’s mentioned:

I ask about Inception, the Christopher Nolan film she stars in with Leonardo DiCaprio, due out this month but surrounded with secrecy. Marion won’t even describe the character she plays; she changes the subject to her hero, Wangari Maathai, the Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner whose work is the reforestation of Africa. In a later phone call, Nolan tells me this much: “The most magical thing about who Marion plays is just to sit there and watch the mystery of the character unfold.”

Inception trailers seem to suggest that Marion Cotillard is the goal Leonardo DiCaprio is trying to reach, rescue or restore to the center of his life. Not many actresses could serve as such a compelling motivating force, but Cotillard possesses the most important feature of a beacon: radiance.
