It’s hard to see these as anything but tough sells, but Slate’s Abby McGanney Nolan has listed ten of the best films that never saw the green light. Some highlights:
Life of Christ – Orson Welles would direct, Gregg Tolland would lens, and Welles himself would play Jesus. As Woody would say, “Well, I gotta model myself after somebody.” One has to admire Orson Welles’ grand ambition.
Adam and Eve – thought up by the once Oscar-showered Leo McCarey. This would maybe have starred James Stewart and Ingrid Bergman. Stewart didn’t want to wear the fig leaf — apparently he thought himself way too thin. This would not have sat well over time. White people, really?
Lord of the Rings Starring the Beatles – of all of them, this is probably the most enticing, with John Lennon as Gollum and Paul McCartney as Frodo.
