I was going to let this one go, but I think it’s worth addressing. ¬†Andrea Peyser actually gets paid to write lazy articles like this one, where she claims that The Kids Are Not All Right, because of various reasons – sex, drugs and lesbianism! ¬†But really, she’s kind of all over the map and I think she needs to get her story straight:
It reaches further than the gay-cowboy romp “Brokeback Mountain,” whose characters maintained a sense of otherness while shielding the kids from their shenanigans. In this movie, exposing kids is the entire point.
And this is how Hollywood does an end run around morality.
“Hollywood has set the stage for the gay agenda, nothing new,” said Laura Bailey, Brooklyn mom of two boys. “Why do you think they did propaganda films in the 1940s? They’re setting the new norm.”
“The movie industry is doing its best to undermine the American family,” said Patricia Whitehead, Connecticut mom of two girls. “Hollywood — we don’t care about the sick lives you lead behind closed doors. Just don’t bring children into it.”
This brazen attempt at trend-setting comes as national polls show Americans oppose gay marriage, half of us strongly. Support for it was at 47 percent in this year’s Washington Post/ABC News poll — but fully two-thirds favored civil unions, in which gay couples enjoy most rights of marrieds without having to stand under thechuppah.
It doesn’t take a genius to glean the truth: Folks are happy with gays living together. But bringing children into the equation is a deal-breaker.
Brazen attempt at trend-setting? ¬†Sick lives? ¬†This passes for journalism at the New York Post? ¬†Okay, so it’s the NY Post. ¬†No one expects anything more than money-grubbing hysteria-inducing nonsense. ¬†At the the same time, it shouldn’t be IGNORED.
By “folks” I guess she means two conservative, homophobic psychos she plucked from god knows where to give quotes that back up her moronic non-point? ¬†God forbid a movie should tell a unique story about our modern world. ¬†As a mom myself, my daughter was lucky enough to attend a much more forward-thinking school in a forward-thinking community where lots of types of non-traditional families were represented. ¬†Two gay men raising an adopted child from Guatemala. ¬†Two gay women using a sperm donor to have two beautiful kids. ¬†One single mom with an adopted girl from China. ¬†One grandmother raising children her own daughter couldn’t raise. ¬†And one single gay dad who adopted an older kid who was doomed to graduate out of foster care with no parent at all.
These various types of families didn’t have it easy, not even at our forward-thinking school. ¬†Homophobia exists, yes, even in Los Angeles. ¬†The kids being raised in non-traditional ways will always feel different, whether it’s because they were an adopted girl from China or a child of a sperm donor in Los Angeles. ¬†I’m guessing that to Andrea Peyser the only thing that threatens the tradition of the American family are gay parents. ¬†Would she object to a single mom by choice having a sperm donor baby as long as she wasn’t gay? ¬†Or a single mom by choice adopting from China? ¬†What is okay and what isn’t?
What really hurts kids are articles like these, which serve no purpose except to spread hate and bigotry, and result in children of non-traditional families feeling like there is something wrong with them.  We are a global village and we have come too far to sink back into the kind of hysteria that continually threatens to destroy our democracy.
The Opposing Views website has put out a call to other writers to expose Peyser’s ignorance and to write letters to the NY Post, letters@nypost.com
