Sharpening the focus on Best Picture

Now that the major festivals are behind us and we’ve seen the best cases presented by the King-makers (so to speak), we should now have a better idea about which films look to be most unsinkable as the final flood of premieres sweeps over us. Just a scant handful of movies remain unseen and unknown. The Fighter, True Grit, Hereafter loom largest as probable 11th hour game-changers. This poll has been distilled to 22 titles — considerably whittled down from the 40 films we were optimistically considering just a month ago. The great pumpkins are soaking up all the moisture causing smaller ornamental gourds to dwindle on the vine. Let’s take another snapshot of the current hopefuls, after the cut.
