Thanks to reader Kevin for posting this link to Gold Derby talking about how Shutter Island is not out of the Best Pic race, thanks to a studio push:
Don’t make the mistake of thinking “Shutter Island” is shut out of this Oscar race just because it’s no longer in movie theaters. Paramount sent out invites this week to academy and guild members to attend screenings in six areas: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Orange County and London. “Every movie that Marty Scorsese and Leo DiCaprio have made together has been nominated for Best Picture and that’s when there were only five slots so imagine the possibilities with 10!” roars a studio source.
That’s a great point: Gangs of New York, The Aviator, The Departed. I’ve been going back and forth on this one for an entire year.¬†¬† How does Shutter Island stack up, box office wise?
Shutter Island – $128 million (metacritic 63)
The Departed – $132 million (metacritic 86)
The Aviator – $102 million (metacritic 77)
Gangs of New York – $77 million (metacritic 72)
Shutter Island isn’t the biggest money maker of the pairing, but it’s damned close. Reviews-wise? Something to be desired. It’s also a Big Studio Movie with lots of tech possibilities.¬†¬† A big studio push could make the difference.
