Casting Aspersions

I’ve let random casting reports slide while we dealt with more immediate concerns, but here’s a brief summary of several hot seats being recently filled.

• Jared Harris, Mad Men’s only gentleman, as scoundrel Professor Moriarity in the Holmes sequel? (Did you know his father is Richard Harris?)
• Ryan Gosling is in talks to replace Leonardo DiCaprio in the political drama, Farragut North. George Clooney co-stars and directs.
• Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts co-star as mother and daughter in Mike Nichol’s adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning August, Osage County.
• Baz Lurmann’s The Great Gatsby. Leo DiCaprio as Gatsby? Tobey Maguire as Nick Caraway? Mia Farrow still haunts my nightmares as Daisy.
• Jodie Foster, please tell Ron Howard you can’t star in his film about a stroke victim unless he comes up with a better title than ‘My Stroke of Insight.’
