AD reader Dan M. has compiled a terrific list of the leading contenders for Best Cinematography, basing his logic on the cinematographer’s industry status or specific films that call for impressive camera and lighting work. Starting with 40 DPs and trimming it down to the most likely, Dan expects the 5 eventual nominees will be among the 20 names on this list. He then mentions 5 alternates who might factor in as underdogs.

So there’s your 20. I almost added Doug Liman (Fair Game), Michael McDonough (Winter’s Bone) Stephen Fontaine (The Next Three Days) Yorick Le Saux (I Am Love) and Steven Fierberg (Love and Other Drugs) but I kept it at the 20 that mostly likely have the best shot. 8-10 of those 20 listed that have much better chances than the other. But out of respect for who they are I listed 20. There are a few leading favorites, as every year, you just know are getting in.
