It is old news by now but it is still worth reporting: Meryl Streep has been cast as Julia Robert’s mother in the film version August: Osage County, which was all the rage on broadway. It’s probably going to be a great Streep performance. Not having seen the play I’m not sure what would be required of Roberts. The film is to be directed by John Wells. Jean Dounmanian and Weinstein are listed as producers.
Streep has been frequently paired up with younger actresses. Roberts is 40 now so she doesn’t really count as a much younger starlet. Streep has worked with Renee Zellweger in One True Thing, Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada and Amy Adams in Doubt. In all three of those cases, the youngers were up to the challenge of starring opposite one of the greatest actresses of all time.
Hopefully Roberts will not be too intimidated.
