Steve Pond injects a bit of common sense into a few theories floating around (my short answers below), despite his over-reliance on Patrick Goldstein’s opinion – Goldstein is smart about many things; the Oscar race is not one of them:
1. That “True Grit,” sight unseen, is a strong candidate to win Best Picture. (The Coens rarely disappoint)
2. That “The Social Network” could be competing as an Original Screenplay rather than an adapted one. (It will and should be adapted)
3. That Mel Gibson might be a Best Actor candidate. (not going to happen)
4. That Ben Affleck’s “The Town” is a bona fide Best Picture contender. (nobody knows anything on this one Рtrust no one).
And a few more theories being floated:
1. Toy Story 3 will win Best Picture (all of the live action films would have to suck; they don’t)
2. The Social Network doesn’t have enough “heart” to win (no evidence to back this up; voters have a brain too, along with a heart and a sex organ).
3. Black Swan is too hardcore for voters (we still don’t know the answer to that yet)
