Cannes 2011: Classic Sidebar screenings announced

Ah, to see The Conformist again on the big screen. Though I can’t complain because the first time I ever saw it was in a stadium seating¬†theater in college, and it’s been one of my 5 favorite films of all time ever since. For years unavailable on home video except for an awful pan-and-scan VHS, Paramount finally brought The Conformist to DVD a couple of years ago — but it’s already gone out of print, and can’t be bought retail anymore. It was restored for that disc, but Vittorio Storaro’s stunning cinematography ow it deserves deluxe Blu-ray remaster.

Meanwhile, Bernardo Bertolucci will receive an Palme d‚Äôor at the festival‚Äôs opening ceremony from Robert De Niro, who starred for the director in ‘1900’ and serves as the president of this year‚Äôs Cannes jury.
