A variation on “Your Favorite Movie Fathers,” let’s make today more about whatever our dads like instead of what we want. I don’t even have to phone up and ask my father. His favorite movie last year was True Grit, and I know off the top of my head the movies he’ll watch again and again: The French Connection, Unforgiven, The Godfather, O’ Brother Where Art Thou, Goodfellas, The Natural. He wouldn’t try to rank them. But I’ll bet his favorite story ever put to film would be Lonesome Dove, so I’m giving it a spotlight clip. Maybe a miniseries isn’t a movie. But my father is flexible with terminology (most of the time he says DVDs are ‘tapes’). You really wanna start a fight about definitions, today of all days? Lonesome Dove stars a wagon-load of Oscar winners and the year it was broadcast Driving Miss Daisy won Best Picture, so argue with that.
I should’ve done a parallel post for Mother’s Day but, rotten son that I am, I forgot. Feel free to list your mother’s favorite movies too. The only film in my father’s collection my mother can tolerate is O Brother Where Art There. Last year her favorite movie was Secretariat, and these would be among my mom’s top 10: A Place in the Sun, The Graduate, Places in the Heart, Sense and Sensibility, Babe, Legends of the Fall. (At least those are the ones I’m willing to name.)
