Most countries are happy to welcome Captain America into theaters with all his brand name clout, but Russia, Korea and Ukraine have asked him to please keep his nationality low-key to avoid offending anybody.
Though it is common for American blockbusters to feature less US-focused titles in foreign markets, Paramount largely decided against the alterations for Captain America, and instead gave foreign countries the choice of two titles, Captain America: The First Avenger or The First Avenger.
Spokespeople for Marvel and Paramount declined to comment on why Russia, Ukraine and South Korea opted for The First Avenger… An inside source speaking to the New York Times on the issue claimed that marketers changed the name in these countries for cultural and political reasons. (THR)
Captain America might not screen in China at all this year because that country’s policy only permits 20 foreign films in theaters each year. (It’s not yet been determined which 20 films China will allow.)
Meanwhile, here’s the latest in a series of really wonderful posters for Captain America. Russia has not yet asked that the villain’s name be changed to Glorious Comrade Red Skull.
