As I read the various articles on predicting the Palme d’or, a few titles rose to the top. The Film Comment Cannes roundtable is an interesting read overall. You’ll find the predictions vary widely, though most are hewing closely to:
1. Like Father, Like Son by Kore-eda
2. Inside Llewyn Davis, by the Coen brothers
3. The Great Beauty, Sorrentino
4. Blue is the Warmest Color, Kechiche
I think Alexander Payne’s Nebraska should be a contender – but it will have to wait for the Oscar race for that – I’m guessing it isn’t quite sexy enough to win here.
Hollywood-Elsewhere’s Jeff Wells thinks the Coens might have the thing sewn up.
Update: Roger Friedman says that Michael Douglas was told he didn’t win, which opens it up for other performances like Dern, or Benicio Del Toro in Jimmy P. or Mathieu Alamric in Venus in Fur…
Beyond that, different titles have been thrown around, like Behind the Candelabra, which would be a big fuck-you to Hollywood. Michael Douglas will probably win Best Actor but he’ll be competing with Bruce Dern for Nebraska, and Oscar Isaac for Llewyn Davis. The two French actresses from Blue is the Warmest Color , Adèle Exarchopoulos, Léa Seydoux, will probably win as well.
Either way, the Palme will be decided by: Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman, Ang Lee, Lynne Ramsay, Daniel Auteuil, Vidya Balan, Christoph Waltz, Naomi Kawase and Cristian Mungiu.
