I love this interview. I don’t think it’s a matter of many of us just being old and out of touch. It’s a matter of watching something that was imperfect but beautiful turn into a fast food industry. It’s depressing, if you remember what things used to be like. I love anyone who can really slice through the bullshit and Obst does that. But she does more. A lot more. Her book is a must-read.
“I watch the Oscars now and I wonder when are we going to see the Oscars turn into the MTV movie awards. [etc.]”
Obst: “Well it’s a really interesting question because the Academy just really doesn’t give a good goddamn.”
Int: But what about ratings?Obst: “The relationship between the ratings the network gets and what the Academy does is minimal, because they’re two entirely different organizations, right? The Academy is the Academy and they sell the rights to the network. I think the big argument is how to make the show less boring.”
Parties okay but only go if nominated [or presenting], “People love to go to the Oscars and they only go if they’re nominated, which is why they love to go, because they’re nominated. No one would be caught dead going to the Oscars if they weren’t nominated … because that’s such a loser-ish thing to do.”
“The most fun is the Golden Globes because there’s liquor and everybody gets drunk.”
Or you could just smoke a doob in the limo on the way there like Jennifer Lawrence or Jack Nicholson. Anyway, it’s worth a watch.
