The films with the highest scores over at Metacritic still have more reviewers to check in before they can be placed in history but right now, with 17 critic reviews, Gravity is looking like the early leader. How it’s breaking down right now for films in the Best Picture race:
1. Inside Llewyn Davis – 99, with 9 reviews so far
2. Gravity – 95, with 17 reviews so far
3. Before Midnight– 94, with 41 reviews
4. Blue is the Warmest Colour – 93, with 8 reviews so far
5. 12 Years a Slave – 92, with 9 reviews so far
6. Dallas Buyers Club – 85, with 8 reviews so far
7. Fruitvale Station – 84, with 43 reviews so far
These days, with everyone and their brother, their mother, the UPS guy, and the neighborhood barista writing film reviews now, there are precious few films that land at 90 or above. Hardly ever happens in the Best Picture race at all of late. Last year, Amour was 94 and Zero Dark Thirty was the year’s champ, at 95. But beyond that, all of the others went below 90. The year before that, there weren’t any, though The Artist was close, at 89. Before that, there was Toy Story 3 (92), The Social Network (95) and Winter’s Bone (90).
