Jeff Schneider got the scoop for The Wrap about a project on the horizon directed by Jonathan Demme, written by Diablo Cody, and starring Meryl Streep. Pic is about a rock n’ roll star who abandons her family to live her dream but then comes home and expects she can start parenting from scratch. Sounds great. I love that projects are developed and made because Streep is involved.

RACHEL*
It is such an achievement in visual storytelling. I was struck by how effective and instrumental the lighting is in this picture (given both, the general look of the film, and the shifting ways in which they shot different scenes; some very traditional while others were super fluid with a lot of movement and little cuts). Also, without being one of the acknowledged visual masters (and I agree that he’s not; compare SILENCE OF THE LABS to the inferior but still good MANHUNTER), it still amazes me how recurringly , the way Demme lits scenes puts to shame all this new “inventive” waves of indie filmmakers that never seem to be able to shoot anything that doesn’t look cheap. It’s so comforting to be in the authoritative hands of a consummate SOTRYTELLER. I suspect at the time, many form illiterates were jarred by the still *very* discernible digital look. I would put RACHEL GETTING MARRIED alongside with PUBLIC ENEMIES as two of the pics that actually demonstrated the potential for beautiful imagery that until then had not been tapped by digital. I mean just go back in time just a bit before that, even some of the most proficient films like COLLATERAL look a little ugly in an unfilmsic kind of way, especially because it’s all during nighttime and inside a car. Finally, Rosemarie DeWitt deserved MANY more mentions than she got in the end.
In honor of Jonathan Demme and his new project, I had to re-watch RACHER GETTING MARRIED. Anyone here care to explain the lack of nominations in all the categories?
Meryl loves to act and her joy translates to the screen. So what if she picks
up her 4th oscar along the way…
I like Meryl. I love to watch her act. Like in the Thatcher film…I was riveted by her acting (but I didn’t follow the movie at all). In any case, I just wish there were other older actresses who could get movies made in Hollywood.
I can’t WAIT for the first set pictures, obviously!
Rock it, girl!
Projects and developed and made because Streep is involved for sure, because she will get a nomination. It’s funny because it’s true.
Love this trio, especially with Demme as a leavening agent on Cody’s quirkiness.
Streep is certainly a force, a powerhouse. She makes things happen.
As i just said in a different thread, she doesn’t seem to stop, not even slowing down! I only wish people wouldn’t look at every Meryl Streep movie as a potential Oscar bait! Even though a good writer-director team is involved in this project, I bet Meryl’s involvement is the major reason why this movie got a green light! That’s enough reason to celebrate:)
4th Oscar for Meryl Streep. Maybe ???? Living legend love her.
