I agree. She was absolutely wonderful in “Shoot the Moon”. That is probably my favorite Diane Keaton performance. She and Finney had such great chemistry on screen together in that film. I always wondered why they both weren’t nominated in 1982 for these roles. The movie seemed to disappear when released, but it truly stands up on recent viewing (the themes surrounding divorce have sadly not changed at all), and is quite a universal film. For those of you who’ve never seen it, check it out if you like watching Keaton or Finney. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
“Shoot the Moon” also contains one of the best adolescent performances on film given by the late actress Dana Hill (who died at the tender young age of 32). The scene where Hill breaks down on the school bus just breaks your heart. A really remarkable performance by Hill when she was an adolescent.

OT : ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ trailer came out. It could be just a summer crowdpleaser…then again it does have a ‘Julie & Julia meets Slumdog Millionaire’ vibe, the lead IS the great Helen Mirren, the producer IS Oprah, the source material IS an international best-seller and the director DOES have a good track record when it comes to high-profile feel-good prestige films (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules)… also, Dreamworks will release it on the same weekend they did The Help a few years ago suggesting they are probably hoping for a breakout hit once again. Anyway, my two cents.
It’s too bad Keaton isn’t offered better material, as she’s one of our best actresses. She’s so strong when given a chance in dramatic material – Mrs. Soffle, Reds, Marvin’s Room and Interiors come to mind.
I think the last really good funny role she had was in Morning Glory a couple years ago. But all this other romantic-comedy stuff she’s been doing is getting kind of old.
But at least she’s still working!
I saw an interview with her where she relayed that “nobody wants me” and that she always has to “fight” for a movie to be in it.
