Academy Award-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow and Annapurna Pictures have reteamed on a film based on the non-fiction book THE TRUE AMERICAN by NEW YORK TIMES journalist Anand Giridharadas. Tom Hardy is set to star. Bigelow will direct and produce the film through her production shingle, First Light. Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, who previously worked with Bigelow as a producer on ZERO DARK THIRTY, is set to produce. Annapurna’s Matthew Budman, who co-produced ZERO DARK THIRTY, will serve as Executive Producer.
THE TRUE AMERICAN meticulously reconstructs two lives that collided in horrific fashion. In the charged, angry days after 9/11, self-styled “American Terrorist” Mark Stroman murdered two immigrants in Texas, while a third man survived being shot in the head during Stroman’s spree: Raisuddin Bhuiyan, a Bangladesh Air Force veteran, was working at a Dallas-area convenience store as he established himself in America.
With Stroman identified and apprehended, the tale begins its tack toward deeper emotional waters. THE TRUE AMERICAN is a richly detailed, affecting account of two men bound, as it turns out, by more than just an act of violence.
The deal was brokered by Annapurna’s Paul Hanson and Christopher Corabi with CAA, which represents Rais Uddin Bhuiyan and Anand Giridharadas, as well as Bigelow and Hardy. Anand is represented for publishing by Katherine Flynn at Kneerim Williams and Bloom. Bigelow’s attorney is Warren Dern of Sloane Offer Weber & Dern; Hardy is represented by Lindy King at United Agents in the U.K. and attorney Jason Sloane of Sloane Offer Weber & Dern.

The three of them seem to make a great team. It’ll be interesting to see how this pans out. The plot seems a little vague but as long as it’s 3 hours I’ll be happy.
Vietnam spawned a number of brilliant films from a great generation of filmmakers. APOCALYPSE NOW, THE DEER HUNTER, PLATOON, THE KILLING FIELDS, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY, FULL METAL JACKET, RESCUE DAWN,
Out the Iraq War, Hollywood produced Bigelow’s masterpiece, THE HURT LOCKER, and nothing else that is remotely good. *Nothing*.
Of course, I’m strictly speaking about “War Films” — because Oren Moverman’s THE MESSENGER is just as essential, and I am a great admirer of IN THE VALLEY OF ELAH. I mean, even Haggis can adequately “direct” provided he’s served with one of the two solid Boal scripts, Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron, and Roger Deakins on a silver platter to help him figure it out. Oliver Stone’s W. will age beautifully and is for the time being lurking on the fringes waiting to be rediscovered and reassessed.
Now, from Bigelow again, what sounds to me like the first great *Drama* since THE 25TH HOUR about Post-9/11.
Bigelow seems to like focusing on American relations with Middle Easterners these days. I am definitely looking forward to this one!
Murtaza, depending on what sort of approach Bigelow wants to take, Boal might not be the best suited writer. For all I know he could pull this off but she may want a more dramatic approach and not a journalistic one. But I’d be tickled pink if Boal was on board.
I am elated. What a premise for this premiere American filmmaker; Bigelow the trailblazer. And what an opportunity for gifted Tom Hardy. Am I wrong to assume Mark Boal has nothing to do with this project? Because that would be all the more wonderful. If there is any reason ZD30 sort of works for me is because of the heroic efforts of Bigelow and Chastain, *and* the criminally unrecognized supporting turns by Jason Clarke and Jennifer Ehle — because that script needed a serious respectful polishing by Sorkin, Gaghan, Ray, Roth, whoever! 2015 release, right? RIGHT? News of the week.
I’m not sure how old Bhuiyan was at the time these events took place, but perhaps Dev Patel could be considered (he’s pretty well known to western audiences).

Why is nobody telling if Mark Boal is writing it or not, Bigelow and Boal is actually the combination that works.
Hardy is excellent, but who’ll play the Bengali guy? I hope someone not from Indian film industry, and if from there then no one else other than Irrfan Khan.
I forgot that Raisuddin Bhuiyan didn’t die. I also remember that Bhuiyan forgave him.

But, as for Kathryn Bigelow directing this, I am now very excited. I think she’ll do an amazing job, because she really understands feelings and emotions. Just look at The Hurt Locker!
I remember that. Ugh, that was an aweful thing Mark Stroman did. Patriotism my ass!! I’m all for Patriotism, but no one needs to go around killing minorities just because they want to associate them with terrorists.
