The trailer for Interstellar premiered at the Smithsonian’s Air & Space Museum as a surprise treat for the school kids who attended the museum and a screening of Hubble 3D, presumably to showcase that Interstellar will be coming soon to an IMAX near you. Washington Post reports:
After a brief announcement, the trailer unspooled to show Matthew McConaughey driving his truck through corn fields while a lush orchestral score swelled in the background. Later, the fields had caught fire, an ominous dust cloud could be seen looming over a baseball game, and McConaughey (playing a character named Cooper) was reassuring his daughter that he loved her — right before being shot into space in order to save the world.
The plot of “Interstellar,” written by Nolan and his brother Jonathan from a treatment by theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, has been kept largely under wraps, although the word “wormhole” has been mentioned in early reports, suggesting that the McConaissance is now on the verge of breaking the time-space continuum. As the trailer’s tag line puts it, “Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here.”

Christopher Nolan has been overlooked for a long time. It could be argued that he was the more deserving nominee in 2002 for ‘Memento’, but lucked out to Jullian Fellowes (Gosford Park). Some felt he should have been nominated for ‘The Dark Knight.’ Just from the brief, enigmatic trailer for ‘Interstellar’, I could detect a hint of Carl Sagan in the tone and mood of the film. If ‘Interstellar’ is as good as ‘Contact’ or better, we may have a winner on our hands.
Really looking forward to something as original as Inception.

Everyone breath a sigh of relief as we will get to see 3 versions of THE DISAPEARANCE OF ELEANOR RIGBY after all. HIM, HER, and THEM. Downside is it looks like THEM is the only one with a shot at a semi-wide release while only the elites at NY/LA/Chicago/San Francisco get to chance to see the cuts from each perspective. I’m OK waiting for home video.

Coincidentally, I am watching Friends rerun #now, and it is the episode in which, prior to the usual opening theme, Ross (Dave Schwimmer) is (inappropriately) singing Baby Got Back to his one-year-old (?) baby girl named Emma (just to please her) while holding her in his arms [Emma loves it; that’s partially the point of the joke; the laughing track’s also doing a good job]. And then Rachel gets in and finds out; naturally, she’s somewhat pissed. xD But somewhere in Act 2 or 3, somehow Rachel also gives it a try and ends up singing that song while dancing to please Emma. At the end of the episode, Ross and Rachel are seen singing and dancing to Baby Got Back [no actual number being played], Ross additionally twerking, Rachel lightheartedly slapping his “back” for a change, both having a good time [the camera occasionally showing, Emma is enjoying it, too], just when the rest of the pack — Monica, Phoebe, Joey and Chandler (plus Phoebe’s boyfriend played by Paul Rudd) — comes in, dumbfounded. LOL . . . .

Agree 100%! I’m loving how fat he is. He is after al freak/force of nature, not a dinosaur — also very consistent with quite a few of y’all’s variants. I’m also hearing it’s Alexandre Desplat’s best since ZERO DARK THIRTY.
So funny when people dismiss movies like INCEPTION and THE PRESTIGE, even though they were far richer and original than 99% of the films coming out every year. But hey, it’s Nolan so I guess only the best is good enough.
I’m hoping it won’t be as disappointing as Dark Knight Rises [my grade: C+] (e.g. [SPOLIER: Dark Knight Rises] the scene in which Bane and Batman are having a final showdown [not really the final one] just in front of the façade of the City Hall or so, with background artists seemingly #pretending to fight in the backdrop, prior to the twist narrative part inside, where Batman will be stabbed by you-know-who . . . — I find the background artists’ mass fight to be beneath the overall standards of the film). All in all, Nolan is another name I trust and for which I’m willing to try to bring myself to shell out my hard-earned money.
Side note: Thanks to our American friends [hyperbole; actually, thanks to those involved] for ever making our beloved semi-legendary [hyperbole] Godzilla look uber obese or at least ’roided up like some pro wrestlers . . . . You guys have just taken up the term obesity to another inflated level. xD
So stoked to see the trailer Thursday night before GODZILLA. What a cinematic summer night!
Fingers crossed it’s one of those enduring Nolans that warrant delicious/rewarding repeated viewings (e.g., DARK KNIGHT trilogy, MEMEMTO) and not one those loud/glossy one-off events (e.g., INCEPTION, PRESTIGE). Either way a treat!
To be a kid seeing that trailer in the Smithsonian…a lot of kids are going to grow up wanting to be astronauts thanks to Nolan.
