So true, Christophe. We just have to hold onto the hope that mature and humorous, albeit a little pervy, British gentlemen still exist somewhere, and we can still dream of finding them and helping them live it up wherever they may be, yes? *sigh*

I thought Sasha had ruined my day, but then I watched the news and I forgave her, realizing she’s not that bad after all, and at least that Woody Allen film takes us back to a day when the Riviera wasn’t occupied by filthy rich Russians and Ukrainians with their gas and blood money. I miss the time when mature and humorous, albeit a little pervy, British gentlemen lived it up under the Mediterranean sun… Good old times!

This trailer didn’t come out a month ago; it came out 2 months ago. I know because I posted it. On May 22. Sasha got a twitter tip that the trailer was in theaters in the UK so she posted it again. These things happen.
When we realized it was a duplicate post, Sasha said I should just delete this one. But by then it already had 10 comments so I didn’t want to throw everyone’s comments in the trash, alright?
In May this trailer got 13 comments. This week it has 26 comments and counting.
I don’t mind a bit if a couple of those comments are from readers telling us this trailer is 8 weeks old. Colin Firth is great, but Emma Stone isn’t. If you click on my name above, it’ll take you to my blog. Emma Stone wasn’t even AT the press conference in New York today and no one would directly talk about her, except Woody, who, of course, adores her. He rarely, RARELY talks to the press en masse like this. No camera’s allowed. It was all print media, supposedly, though many had those tablets that take pictures, eIt’s an unfunny comedy, therefore a drama about atheism, really. I kid you not. No nominations anywhere for this one. Jacqui Weaver and Atkins were fine, but didn’t POP in any Academy way.
Colin Firth remembered me and shook my hand. So that was good. He seemed delighted to see me.I did help him get his Oscar by constantly campaigning for him during TKS daze. He was smiling from ear to ear, but would not answer any questions posed about working with Stone.
She shoulda been great in this, instead, she wasn’t even particularly funny. Waste all ’round. And now she’s also starring in his next movie! Oy VAY!

in Midnight in Paris, Owen Wilson doesn’t end up with Marion Cotillard. She refuses to join him. So he has to return to present-day Paris and stumbles straight into waltzing off with Léa Seydoux — who’s 18 years younger than Wilson in real life, and in fact her character seems to be even younger in the movie.

I must’ve paid to see the sickening version, because the way I remember it, a delusional American schlub goes to France and snags the prettiest girl in all of Paris who’s 18 years younger than he is.
Match Point, I’m fine with. Maybe that’s why Match Point is the last Woody Allen movie I really liked until Blue Jasmine broke the 8-film dry spell between 2005 and 2013 (for me).
All great directors have a proclivity & desire to return to themes that matter to them. Hitchcock, Kubrick. etc. I don’t recall Midnight in Paris, Match Point, to name some of Allen’s most recent films being about an “older man” and a younger woman….When Manhattan appeared it was hailed as a masterpiece now Allen haters can’t separate the artist from the “accusations hurled at him”. For fans of his like myself I judge each individual film on it’s own merits. I will enjoy myself as I usually do with Woody – and his cast here looks just great & it sounds like a fun film.

Quickly, I’ll just say how I feel, speaking only for myself. I don’t have any problem at all with real people of any disparate age gap hooking up with one another in real life. Who am I to question the real lives of real people who have real feelings?
What does bug me is when a director repeatedly goes back to same well, movie after movie, time after time, always creating the same fictional situation that involves a man who’s often twice as old as some fresh young girl that he plucks from the garden of these fictional worlds.
It gets old and it gets boring and frankly it gets to be a little creepy, because to me it shows a director who’s really hung up on his one favorite fantasy. Because whether or not these kinds of relationships exist in real life is not the point. The thing that bothers me about Woody Allen year after year is how he wants to spin this same fairy tale over and over, like a desperate tune played on various surrogate instruments for the past 3 decades.
That’s why Blue Jasmine was so fascinating and refreshing. It’s like Woody Allen finally had a new idea.
I see no issue in Stone playing Firth’s daughter, however…Sasha never said “Stone should be playing Firth’s daughter because the Hollywood old white male dominated yada yada and when do we see an older woman with a younger man?” Maybe Sasha felt that Stone would make a believable daughter to Firth? I think it would be great seeing Stone playing Firth’s daughter. Now, of course, Sasha could have meant that Stone is too young to play Firth’s love interest. But I won’t jump the gun since “age” was never mentioned, only her role in the movie.

I’m not responding directly to Sasha or Diana for that matter. I’m, however, using the quote as the springboard to lead to the issue of hypocrisy in general when reflecting upon the circumstances of what might seem to be a relatively considerable age gap [to others, not to me] even in this case, thus discussing the matter without pointing the finger to anyone in particular (if they are sincerely not hypocritical).
What I mean by ‘hypocrisy’ in this context is that, by using the quote while at the same time not necessarily directing my thoughts towards the editor/site owner herself, I am under impression that . . . — only in case those people (our readers and peoples of the world) who oppose to a couple’s relationship especially in real life just because one of the latter is perceived to be relatively too much older [[ahh . . . . we some of us, not myself in this case, are willing to [pretend(?) to] tolerate, for instance, gay marriage ([apologies to gay people; I’ve strategically raised this issue on purpose to relate it with age gap both concerning the façade of the so-called political correctness]), etc., but, surprisingly, we can’t accept age difference in relationships (seriously . . . ?)]] — . . . some people may have been too conveniently pulling an angle in playing the so-called liberal game.
By the way, in case of Firth and Stone the actress, and speaking for myself, had Colin’s character and Emma’s, in real life, become romantically involved, I would have said congratulations. And even in this film, I don’t have any problem convincing myself […] at all.
Totally agree with Sasha. Can’t get past the age difference. Terrible casting, made worse by the fact that Emma Stone now looks so waify and childlike.

Honestly Sasha’s right. Are you kidding me Gustavo H.R.? It it was reversed people would be making an even bigger deal, but it’s become so common in Hollywood to have older actors with younger actresses as love interests that rarely does anyone notice. I’m glad Stone has and its not like she’s dismissing the flick other than that. Anyway it looks charming. Allen usually finds the right actors for his projects and Firth seems like such an obvious, but great choice. The same goes for Stone. I’m assuming they hit it off as she will be in his next flick as well. She seems ideal for Woody Allen flicks.
Even though this embed is framed inside of a Warner Bros promo package, it’s Sony Classics in the US. Warner distrib in UK. Not sure about the rest of Europe.
Eileen Atkins and Jackie Weaver looks like scene stealers to me…Oscar nominations maybe?
This trailer’s been around a while — been seeing it in theaters since May at least. I thought it was a Sony Classics thing? Warners is distributing in Europe?

It looks and feels very promising (to me) as a quality film. I’ve seen Woody Allen’s sublime signature written all over the place. Looks like something I could enjoy twice or more in theater in terms of feeling connected and related with it a la American Beauty, Big Lebowski, etc. [Sipping White Russian]
And I like what I’ve seen in Art Direction-Production and Cinematography so far, as well.
(Cast performance: It’s a given because it’s another film by Woody Allen; so, all of the thesps are going to deliver – FOR SURE! There’s no need to sound like a broken record just like I’m ironically doing it right now to make a point.)
Looks like Allen may have made Emma stand out this year as well. (Good for her.)
I’ve really got a good feeling about this film. . . . I think I’m going to love it when it comes my way.
