The tile of the award is “Best Performance By…” If an actor gives two great lead performances, they should be eligible for a nomination for each.
Otherwise, just call it “Best Actor” and leave it at that.
Christophe: Sadly there’s this idiotic rule that prevents any actor or actress to get more than one nomination in a category each year.
It just reeks of the Academy wanting as many stars nominated as possible since there’s nothing preventing a nominee to get more than one nomination in any other category than in the four acting categories.
I wish they would remove the rule. Maybe it would prevent someone from winning because they would be splitting votes with themselves (though that didn’t stop the likes of Soderbergh from winning Director), but at least we would get rid of some of the category frauds. Every year when someone has two lead performances in contention, one of the studios decides to push one of the performances as a supporting one just to get the person in. It’s ridiculous!
Get rid of the rule – NOW!
Is it possible that she’s the only lead female nominee this year? she’s got so many roles, she could fill the 5 slots on her own!
Maybe it’s just me, but I think Farrell will get the biggest boost here.
Wow, it definitely has this Bergman-esque feeling I already adore. It looks really great and Jessica Chastain’s performance seems impeccable, as always. Give this woman an Oscar as soon as possible!

Should be Chastain’s year. She reminds me of a young Liv Ullmann, so having Ullmann directing her should be something special.

oh wait, nevermind on the latter – that was a short play by Strindberg called The Stronger. I got it confused with Miss Julie because we discussed them on the same day in my theater class
Even though I’ve been championing Anna Kendrick for The Last Five Years, once I saw this role for Chastain in one of phantom’s long lists, I knew it was the early favorite based on the source material and the talents of Chastain. (I doesn’t hurt that she needs no make-up to look the part) but now that I see this trailer I’m pretty sure of it since it doesn’t seem to make the mistake of being too entrenched in the period (I’ve always suspected that people of 150 years act much like we do, but without all the selfies)
There’s a scene in the show that can famously be played in two entirely different ways if you take it out of context, it’s between the two main females. It’s really quite fascinating, looked for a link to both interpretations, but can’t find one.

The trailer looks fantastic, now I see why Liv Ullmann said a few months ago that she never says something like this about her work, but after seeing Miss Julie with a select audience, she was VERY proud of the film.
P.S. With Amy Adams (Big Eyes), Jessica Chastain (Miss Julie) and Julianne Moore (Still Alice) all confirmed to be on the radar this year, could this be the season of the overdue redheads ?

Schubert’s Piano Trio in E- Flat (2nd movement). From Barry Lyndon to The Hunger, now throbs intensely once again to hot up Miss Julie.
I’m all about these classy/torrid love affair movies, especially when Jessica Chastain stars in them, and they look this gorgeous.

I think it looks ravishing. I remember reading this in foundations of modern drama class, and I loved it.
I love everything that we get glimpses of in this trailer. I’ve seen Ullman’s pervious directorial efforts which had been very solid and in full service of amazing material (Ingmar Bergman’s original scripts no less), but this another level. Like a seasoned pro, Ullman seems to be in complete command of Mikhail Krichman’s talents who by the way between this and LEVIATHAN might end up being the cinematographer of year period. But I digress. Of course I expected Ullman to be second to none at exploiting every ounce of her actors’ capacities, and the hints are clear, it seems to be Collin Farrell’s best to date. And what else can we say about Chastain? Add another role of a lifetime to her astonishing repertoire. I fully expect *this* will be the performance for which she’s considered for Oscar (assuming of course it’s released in ’14 which seems sort of clear if you think they’re already releasing a trailer). Anyways, in terms of music, I expect this will use existing material so that’s why there’s no composer listed. I love the confidence they have by using cues everyone associates with that other film, but the quality and ambition on display fully correspond. The compositions, the movement, *that* location. This woman has mastered craft. Finally we shouldn’t forget that he source in the best possible hands for reasons we all know about.
So…in a perfect world it would be Chastain in Ullman’s MISS JULIE vs. Kidman in Herzog’s QUEEN OF THE DESERT up for Best Actress, and the rest would take the year off.
Bergman-esque but seems like it’s missing something. Wish Liv has a small cameo.
