Deadline reports that The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby will be shown in its two parts, beginning October 10. The combined version will be released September 12. This is a film you luxuriate in every second — three hours of it would be heaven. Both Richard Linklater and Ned Benson are playing with form in cutting film up and re-arranging it back in unexpected ways. While Michael Apted surely did this with his Up series in documentary form, it’s rare to see filmmakers stray from the usual pattern of making a film, editing it and releasing it. It exists as a whole and complete thing, except when directors decide to recut their films later (none of these ever top their original).
Ned Benson, with Eleanor Rigby, has breathed full life into each one of his characters but most importantly, the female characters. Romantic comedies these days tend to either turn into glossy high end fairy tales designed for mass female audiences or they’re quirky indies involving a manic pixie dreamgirl and some dude who comes of age within it, learning from her, becoming a man as a result of his association with her. That’s fine, of course, taking its cue from the grandaddy of all – Annie Hall. But how nice to see a deeper love story where what’s going on inside the woman matters too. There’s also something about these actors who are so well cast you could watch them all day, chief among those, Jessica Chastain who has a kind of magic about herself that makes you curious about every flicker of emotion on her face. She is endlessly watchable.
Chastain is having another one of those years where she’ll be in multiple Oscar contending Best Picture, starting with Eleanor Rigby, but also Interstellar, A Most Violent Year and Miss Julie.
You’re so dismissive of James… He’s been giving so many amazing performances for so long, he deserves better treatment, really. Watching him in Filth, X-Men and Eleanor Rigby is just magical, I don’t think i’ve seen a actor show as much range as he does in these films in a long, long time. He’s one of the finest actores ever, and it baffles me how he doesn’t even have a oscar nomination by now.
“I loved her performance in “Take Shelter” with Michael Shannon a few years back.”
I remember seeing her in this at a film festival, before I’d seen Tree of Life or really known anything about her. It could have been such a thankless role (the supporting role as the supportive wife) but she brought something special to it. I remember coming out of the screening and saying to my friends that she’ll win an oscar in the next few years.
I think highly of Jessica Chastain as an actress. But she isn’t really a star, outside of the film blog world. At least not yet.
“…(Jessica Chastain) has a kind of magic about herself that makes you curious about every flicker of emotion on her face. She is endlessly watchable.”
This is the main reason of why She has become one of my favorite actress to watch, you never get tired of her and each role she plays is completely different form her previous roles. I can’t wait to see her on Eleanor Rigby!
I loved her performance in “Take Shelter” with Michael Shannon a few years back.
It’s only a matter of time before she gets a golden boy. It certainly could be this year, even with a full deck of Best Actress candidates waiting in line.
OT
It’s official. “Ida” will be Poland’s submition to the Best Foreign Film category. It was a no brainer, but I’m still psyched about this news. It can actually happen – Poland’s first Academy Award in this category. Fingers crossed.
“ . . . chief among those, Jessica Chastain who has a kind of magic about herself that makes you curious about every flicker of emotion on her face.”
Ditto.
Chastain is truly gifted when it comes to drama genre and conveying a deeper meaning of the film character’s psyche and facial expressions. I just couldn’t see how she would ever go wrong (in drama films, in general). Regardless of a film’s overall quality, Chastain always delivered on her part; unlike others, she was just too good for commonplace blunders.
By the way, the floating part of the purple dress she wore on the red carpet must have been so light because it gave an impression of […] mildly dancing in the wind and the image of butterfly’s wings to me. Nice choice, Sis. : )
[Just a dude checking out some great beauties]
(Still #not really diggin’ the trailer, but will check out the film mainly for Chastain’s performance.)
“{Jessica Chastain} has a kind of magic about herself that makes you curious about every flicker of emotion on her face. She is endlessly watchable.”
This echoes how many feel I suspect. She may well be the greatest, and most versatile, actress out there at the moment – she is like glue to the eyes.
I’m still blown away how may Academy members chose NOT to vote for her in Zero Dark Thirty {though the way that movie was just abandoned is fucking embarrassing}.
On the bright side she favorited a tweet of mine recently, so that was a buzz.
That photo above of Jessica Chastain on the red carpet in the purple dress is just stunning. Wow.
