“Each year the Gotham Awards honor the best work from our independent storytellers and help new audiences discover their work. We congratulate this year’s nominees, from THE MASTER film artists to the talented newcomers, a true representation of the rich and diverse range of today’s independent filmmaking,” said Joana Vicente, Executive Director of IFP and the Made in NY Media Center. “We are grateful to our nominating committees of film critics, journalists, programmers and film curators for their dedication to selecting the nominees from so many worthy submissions.”
“For 2014, the seven competitive awards include Best Feature, Best Documentary, Best Actor, Best Actress (presenting sponsor euphoria Calvin Klein), Breakthrough Actor, the Bingham Ray Breakthrough Director award, and the Gotham Audience Award. In addition to the competitive awards, Gotham Award Tributes will be given to actor Tilda Swinton, director Bennett Miller and Industry Tribute recipient Netflix’s TED Sarandos.” (via BroadwayWorld)

Dear White People is better than any of the Best Picture nominees, save Birdman, which I’m seeing tomorrow.
‘Under the Skin’ is one of the strangest films I have seen but also a fascinating film. Johansson was terrific. If your cinematic taste is mainstream then you will probably be fidgeting with boredom though.
Great lineup! I’m extremely happy that my #2 favorite film of the year so far (Under the Skin) is getting some recognition. Really exciting to see Boyhood, Under the Skin, Birdman and the Grand Budapest Hotel in the same lineup AND Ethan Hawke (He was truly great in Boyhood)
I looked at the Best Picture lineup and thought “Oh, man. I was REALLY hoping to see The Skeleton Twins land here” only to see Bill Hader’s name appear later! That’s my favorite nomination in this lineup, that’s for sure
I definitely think if Chastain is nominated for anything it’s going to be Interstellar. And, in my opinion, it’s going to feel a lot like 2011 when she was recognized for The Help instead of far superior work in The Tree of Life. I’m imagining that Interstellar will be her least impressive work of the year, but in the showiest and most recognizable film.
“Chastain’s, as I’ve heard her role/screentime isn’t as large as most are assuming.”
So that’s some good intel right there for those whose lives revolve around the Best Actress category — so if those reports are to be believed then it looks like if she’s nominated it’ll be in Supporting and for INTERSTELLAR.
I’m not surprised that Gotham recognized Isaac’s work for AMVY without recognizing Chastain’s, as I’ve heard her role/screentime isn’t as large as most are assuming.
I guess A Most Violent Year was screened for Gotham members? It always seems extremely early to announce year end honors….
@benutty
Oh. Wow. Kenny is an asshole, but he’s got a pretty sharp taste. Now, if he went gaga for Chandor’s two previous, that diminishes that praise in my view. We’ll see tho! If anything I’m there for Isaac and Chastain. Nice job correlating those.
I should be on twitter.
Very glad to see this nominees. I have just missed Love is Strange and Birdman from the Best Picture Line up, but the other three I think are great and Under the Skin is the most haunting and touching movie I have seen in a long time. Birdman is the movie I am most looking forward to. Hawke as actor is great, really great line up, let´s hope this is a trend that makes it to the Oscars, I can see Grand Budapest Hotel getting a BP nod easily. Is there any chance for Scar Jo thoguh?
Bryce: I know a few people who saw AMVY screening in Boston a few months back. It also screened last weekend in NYC because of this tweet (which I happen to think is one of the best film tweets ever): https://twitter.com/Glenn__Kenny/status/523189773423611904. Glenn Kenny actually served on the Gotham nomination committee.
What a great lineup of nominees.
Biggest take away by nautical mile is Ethan Hawke’s nomination.
So everyone, listen up, let’s start showering this boy with citations for his superb turn in BOYHOOD, shall we?
Not totally sure how a Scottish film, funded with British lottery money, and directed by a British director qualifies for these, but YES! Under the Skin was by far the best movie I have seen this year and in a perfect world would be right in the thick of the awards discussion, especially in tech categories like Best Score and Best Sound Design.
So these people have seen A MOST VIOLENT YEAR? What’s the buzz around it, then? Is Isaac now a contender for a nomination for the Academy Award for the Best Performance of an Actor in a Lading Role in 2014??
Guess I am going to have to see Under the Skin after all:). I am glad the panel agreed to award the Foxcatcher Acting team with a special Gotham Jury Award. Hopefully, Wes Anderson might get some kudo love too. Wonder how Best Documentary is going to play out…I’ve heard quite some buzz regarding CitizenFour.
Nice to see some recognition for Under the Skin, by far the best thing I`ve seen so far this year. The director, cinematographer and score composer deserve a slew of awards and nominations.
